Is the 1k service really just a glorified oil change??? Being charged about $310.00 for it here in Huntington, N.Y.

The specifics of the 1k are in your Owners Manual. $300 buys you a motorcycle jack, service manual, and a few decent tools to boot.

Nothing in the 1k would qualify as rocket science, or even difficult to a person of modest mechanical ability. My advice would be to do it yourself, if you are able or inclined. : )

Sorry Chainsaw...I can work my way around my arpeggios and scales on my axe like you wouldn't believe, I can take a Heidelberg or a Ryobi apart and put it back together, but I just never accquired the skills of the engine! Doesn't mean I can't ejoy the hell outta them!! I've had 2 Harleys, 1 CBR600F4I and now the buell. I've survived without the the mechanical ability pretty well. Just gonna have to depend on the pro's as my students and clients depend on my skills!

The 1K service is a piece of cake, if you can loosen a couple bolts & drain oil, then you can do it.

Course you may take it in & get the ever famous "wall service".
Thats where they park your bike next to a wall & dont even touch it, yet claim its all done & charge you full price.

At 1K miles, basically the only things that should be required on any bike are, fluid change & check belt & chain tension. Since the XB's dont even need the belt checked then its that much easier.

My 1,000 hour service on my tuber was "mandatory" according to the dealer for my warranty. They said after that to just keep receipts. It included primary adjustment, primary fluid change etc etc. And Dyna you know better than that, its easy to tell that they did your service because the oil is a quart over filled!

Just beware, that DynaSquid's Buell blown up many times.
Certainly not due to the "personal" maintanence...
It was ALL Buells fault...............

sorry Dyna, I don't know you, or your X1. I've just heard you whining on this board so many times about that damn thing. I may be wrong, but couldn't resist the jab....
Please forgive me.... : )

Bart..yes you are wrong.
My X1 never even made it long enough between blowups for me to even perform any maintenance on it.

All the oil changes & such were performed by the stealership....hey maybe thats the problem?? They are friggin idiots.

Kerry,
They gave you a bargain. Lighthouse quoted me $348.00 for the 1000 mile check up. As I had already done it , I respectfully declined. Took me and my friend Gerry about an hour to do, we figured it would take us a half hour the next time. Really all there is to it is changing the engine and transmission oil and filter, and adjusting the primary chain.
The last time I visited Lighthouse, they performed the service ,( warranty replacement of the wheel bearings), poorly, and tried to rip me off to the tune of $196.00 which was refunded by Harley Customer service.
Bottom line: steer clear of Lighthouse if you can.

The XB needs a TPS reset around the 1k mark, that has to be done by the dealer (unless you live near Scooter).

Right you are Flier. I forgot. I had my TPS done when I put the race kit on.
Lighthouse only charged me $35 for that. I put the race kit on myself. Took my and my friend Gavin about an hour.

Yeah, doing everything else required for the 1k is a piece of cake but the cost of a TPS reset at most shops is minimal and well worth it.
