The board I got the pic from (www.corner-carvers.com) mentioned that he does that quite frequently...

Does it look to any of you like he's on the rear brakes? I would imagine that if he was on the gas there would be smoke by now unless he set the bike up (hard rear tire) just to do that.

It's not back brake.
He's on the gas.

I know what backing it in is and that usually stops WAY before the apex. He may indeed be on the brakes to induce that, but look at the extension on the forks... sort of indicates he might be on the gas.

It doesn't look like he's on the back brake...but I'd like to see how his laptimes are, that far over, he has very little in terms of contact patch, so I would think he would end up losing some time in having to transition from that slide to a better angle to start applying throttle.

My guess would be that he's out there just having fun ;^D

If he is on the brakes I'd bet he was on the ground a fraction of a second after the pic. He is too low and a spinning rear is the only thing that would carry him through that corner.

I forget you live in the flat land.
I see guys getting side ways all the time.
They do it to show off.
It's real funny when the tire catches grip before they want it to.
Can you say high side.
You don't have to be burning up the back tire to get it to spin up and leave a mark.

All gas, maybee used some brake to enduce it, but you wouldn't be able to sustain it that long and through the turn by using the brake.

Also you can see a gap between the brake peg and his foot.

Its the two wheeled version of Drifting...420, pay more attention when you watch Nicky Haden on the race track, he is notoriuos for backing it into the corners and you RARELY see tire smoke from him. Its all the dirt track/speedway style of going through the corners.

Any way you cut it he loses time getting around the corner.

Otherwise, if this guy can pull this stunt on a regular basis he's a damn fine rider - that is not easy to do with that type of bike and modern rubber.

Kaudette, he may lose time BUT it allows you to brake later than the guy you are racing and get the bike turned so you can stay ahead of him out of the corner.

I saw Bostrom do it twice to the same guy at the same corner at Laguna a few years ago. First time the guy pased him back before the start finish line but not the seoncd time, I think he might have a got a podium out of it.

Now he didn't do it quite as far as this guy, and i suspect this guy is doing it more for fun than speed. I have only ever done it in the dirt but is great fun.

Funny, that's what I said too

there's backing it in, and there's drifting, but what this guy is doing is slip sliding away.

I can't even imagine being that low and having the back end out like that, he's got to be an ace with his throttle control to be able to pull that off like that...he's gotta be doing it for fun, cause no way he could maintain a race line sliding that extreme.

Wycked,

When Nicky backs it in, it's with the brake, like the Bostroms, etc. McCoy backed it in with the power on, and it does smoke the tire! It has also destroyed his body with highsides, and he doesn't do it much anymore.

Not argueing with you Anony, but it was my understanding he/they use the rearbrake just to start the slide, then gets on the power to keep the slide going. I have also seen alot of times when the tire smoke isn't visible in pictures when they are backing it in, which is what I was refereing to above about not always being able to see the tire smoke.

SWEET! Not sure at the moment Dennis. Daves bike day has come up at the same time as a couple of other commitments. But I may just have to make a trip of it anyways on a different day.
