Twenty Bonus Points to the first person to properly diagnose the problem.

I ride a '02 Triumph Sprint RS with 22,000 miles on the clock. It's very well taken care of and has had no problems to this point.

After work on Friday I started the bike as usual and rode less than a mile to a gas station. I filled up the tank, stuck the key in the hole, turned it on, pulled in the clutch, and the bike started to crank over and then fired up. I didn't push the starter button, it started on it's own.

I didn't believe what I just saw so I turned it off and repeated the drill. Each time, the bike started without touching the starter button, just a pull on the clutch. I had brake lights and turn signals but no headlights. I think I had tail lights but I'm not 100% sure, and all the fuses were good.

At that point I was 10 miles from home, I didn't know if the bike was safe to ride, and I didn't have a clue what the problem was or what to do about it.

What would you have done and how would you have fixed the problem?

I'll tell you all about it in a couple of days, after you've had a chance to give your opinions.

Two questions:

(1) Was the bike in gear or in neutral when you pulled in the clutch?

(2) Did the starter continue to run if you held in the clutch?

sounds like the starter button was shorted to ground (ie, stuck in "on mode"; )...to fix, whack with big hammer and buy a buell.

Yeah starter button has grounded so that as soon as you release the idiot proof safety systems, being the clutch lever switch the starter ticks over. I bet if you stick it in gear and leave the side stand down nothing will happen.

As for the starter / kickstand / logic system / keyless entry system / etc. etc. etc. :

Everything about the bike was normal except that I didn't need to use the starter button. The starter didn't continue to run when the motor was running, so the starter didn't run when I used the clutch to shift gears.

So, do I ride it home or call my son to come get me?

When I get it home, what do I look at first?

Hmmmm.....I think I've seen this posted on another message board

I also ride a '00 Sprint ST.

I haven't heard of anyone else having problems quite like that though.

Lets see who's smarter, us or them.

Newfie: Part of the Monday maintenance schedule on my dearly departed Y2K M2 was to tighten or replace everything that had come loose or fell off over the weekend. I've saved enough on Loc-Tite to make a down payment on a good used Buell. That said, sooner or later, your Buell will start by itself. How are you going to fix it. Twenty Bonus points are on the line here. That ain't a cheap prize.

It doesn't sound like it's purely electrical, since the starter stops cranking when the engine fires up, unless the Triumph automatically detects when the bike is running and disables the starter (I've seen this in some cars).

Does the bike automatically start if your headlights are on hi-beam?

Since the last change was a full tank of gas, and the headlight failed to light, my guess is that you accidentally overfilled the tank, and some gas spilled out the overflow hose and connected the headlight wire to the starter wire. I'm gonna guess that the bike has the starter disable circuit I mentioned above, and that circuit also disabled the headlight.

I would expect it's safe to ride home, provided you still have 10 miles of sunlight left, and wouldn't need the headlight.

Of course, this could all be way off base, and you were just low on blinker fluid. : )

My Buell did that when I connected the wiring in front up wrong, but it did not disable starter after ignition.Same thing happened when the handlebar switch housing was tightened improperly.
Check wiring to see why headlight went out and what could energize to start engine and then shut off.Did lights come on after the bike started?
