When one starts tempting fate by rolling the big numbers, what may or may not be an obstacle is already a forgone conclusion. It is better one should focus instead on what is truly important i.e. time allocation on the 11:00 news based upon the size of the debris field.

Weren't we just on a thread about newbie and rusty riders getting killed

Yep, but im neither a newbie nor Rusty. Well aware of the implications of such doings & I could see straight ahead for a long @ssed distance. Have no death wish myself, just that damn little devil sitting on my shoulder telling me "go ahead, you know you want to"

Exactly the reason why I'll stick to my slow...antiquated V-twin...POS...Buell XB.
My wife says I have an addictive personality and the 170 mph aphrodisiac may just put me over the edge! (sure do like the looks of the 2003 silver over black R1's though...maybe an R6 will be safer...or GSXR750....on no!...I'm turnin' Japanese!)

Take care Dyna, at those speeds if anything at all go's wrong, you be toast!
Damn it's fun though ain't it.
I took my old FJ12 out the other day just to give it an airing, wound it up til it felt like Buell cruising speed, and when I looked at the clock it was knocking on 140! too much comfort!

ME, 130+mph started a speed wobble, became a tank slapper and then the next thing I knew I was bouncing down the road. Skid mark of bike was measured at 376', and I bounced and slid down the road right behind it.

Walked away by the grace of GOD, and I understand that today also.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE, get a track license soon. We should not lose another member of our relatively small fraternity of everyday two-wheel riders, and one more family comes out on the short end of the stick, just because of "seeing what the thing will do" in an inherently unsafe and untrustworthy environment.

NUF' said, it's on each of us to make it home safe to our loved ones each and every day. Has your wife read this thread, yet?

Those Gixxer 750's are wicked fast. Almost up to litre bike times in both top speeds & qtr mile.

One at the strip last night was running 10.2's

Then there was an older 1100 model..late 80's, obviously a little work done to it..but it was running low 9's.

The real danger in the sportbikes on the street is not the run-up to 150, 160 or 170mph, just to find out. The danger lies when you are always going everywhere at 100mph+. The run-up to top speed exposes us to the risk for a half minute or so, the constant travel at 100 to 120 is much more risky, because the bikes are so stable and the HP comes on so smooth, 100mph feels like you're going 50. I am getting the sense from Dyna that he is scooting about at high speeds a lot of the time and has fallen into that trap, because it's there I want to use it. That's why I say, GET YE TO A TRACK, soon...

Constant travel at 100mph plus on the street is a dangerous venture for a family man.

I am sending out the organ donor cards, except to 420, who I am sure, cannot donate organs in his condition.

Actually Curt, I will shoot up to 120-130-140-170: D for a brief moment, but the majority of my riding is done 10-15 over the limit. Im no saint & will never proclaim to follow asinine speed limits where the only goal is revenue enhancement. Ask Dana or the others about our trip to RA...except for 1 extremely brief run up to 130, I kept my speed at about 80 or so.

Im not into losing my license or giving the cops any $$, so I limit my time to high speed runs to areas that I have scouted before I attempt it.

I never ever ever travel at a constant speed above 85.

I don't like to be a mother hen but I wouldn't be doing 172 at night. Too much stuff down the road that you can't see. Well, I ride an M2 so I won't be doing 172 at night, during the day, at the track, at Bonneville, etc.

John, your bike couldnt do 172 if you dropped it out of a plane at 40,000': D

Not out of a plane it wouldnt. Terminal velocity is what..120-130mph? Something like that.

I really don't see the attraction to top speed!!!!

So you go like that for a few seconds then drop back to reality!!!!

Give me a twisty road and I am very happy at 80-140!!!

Thats Kilometers per hour up here in Canada, don't forget to throw in an extra 30 minutes for Newfoundland so that must make some kinda difference.

Blake, can your mathematical computations figure that one out!!!!

Blake, so what is the terminal velocity of an approximately 500 lb. motorcycle?

Greg, your comment hurt me emotionally. So I've decided to name my bike. I've named it "Slow Poke Paint Shaker Patty Whose Color is Blue". I know it's long and it's clunky but I don't have a lot of experience with the whole "name your bike" thing.

Give it a shot Newfie. Its wild the way your peripheral vision gets blurred & it feels just like you are going thru a tunnel...only really fast thru the tunnel.

Gives me an immense amount of respect for the bike racers as well as drivers such as nascar or indy car where they achieve those types of speeds in traffic.

LOL, I like the way you managed to merge topics.
Now if you somehow could have included the letters WMD or Bush into it, then we could have a threeway conference call with the war topic nutz: D

Hah, John, of course you are right, especially at an altitude of 40,000 FT! I didn't want to go all physics on the Squid-man. I guess I should say that if your bike won't do 172 if dropped from a plane at 40,000 FT, neither would the Squid machine. How's zat? : ]

im sure that with all of the liter class design and performance, that the R1 has been in a tunnel, and the coefficient drag is known, so with that, and the weight, and an approximate air density, and the givens of gravitational force, it would be easy to find a terminal velocity for the R1, but the real unknown is whether or not it would fall straight down, or how it would twist and tumble through the air.

My M2 Droped from $16K to $12K in 5 years
My GSXR1000 Droped form $20.5K to $15K in 11 months.

Ergo: in line 4 's drop faster than Buells
