Riding home from Great Lakes dragway tonight I decided to open up the R1 just a bit. Hit 172 mph before I backed out. Fastest I had done previously was 160. At 170 this thing was still pulling like a freight train & the digital speedo was rocketing up 3-4 numbers at a time. Eventually I will peg it, just better be a nice smooth road in front of me.

i have done 180 (indicated) on a gixxer once, and i had an FZR that would indicate 165 on a weekly basis, but that FZR had some serious japanese wishful thinking involved. ive done it, its fast, but i feel no need to ever do it again.........................till i get on that gixxer and start twisting the wick, then i want it ALL. better than sex and more addicting than crack. then i get on my Buell, and i could care less about the top speed. funny how that works. |

Haven't quite hit 172, but I did get clocked at 169 on my old KZ1000. Then again it had GPZ1100 pistons, major head work, extended swing arm and NOS. I couldn't take it full throttle as the front was floating waaaayyyy tooo bad. And when I say clocked, I mean by the local State Patrol, good thing he was a friend and egged me to do it just to see what she should do. Yeah I was chicken, but then again I'm still alive! |

Dang Dyna, after going that fast, don't the speed limit feel more like parking lot speeds! |

gregg -- when reaching a certain speed, do you notice that things seem to slow down, get quiet, and, to use your word, get all spooky? very zen like . . . . . that's my experience at speed, anywho |

Not at 160+ they dont, 5hit is flying by so fast that your vision is seriously screwed up. |

yep, I lknow what you mean . . . .very much tunnel vision . . .. but it gets really quiet for me, and things slow way down . . . . . likely a difference in the substances we abused/didn't abuse when we were younger |

Euphoric would be a good description. At those speeds, my heart rate drops and breathing is so relaxed. The vision narrows to the vanishing point as anything peripheral is just a blur. The gyroscopic effect is so strong you swear you are flying inches above the road surface and the bike is so stable you don't even consider any steering input. I have never been so close to feeling like I was in heaven. The inverse is one mistake and you will be but for some reason at that moment it doesn't seem to matter. I can only imagine what goes through Richard Nallin's and the others that run at Bonneville feel. |

Im not sure its the same feeling because you have nothing to gauge your speed against. No poles, trees, fences, etc. Whole lot of nothing. |

There ya go Dyna! Salt! That way you'd know exactly how fast you were going, and have a time slip to prove it. Safer too. One way street ... No cars ... No police ... Just wide f'in' open!

Think I would rather run Maxton. I have heard you get too much wheel spin due to the loose salt surface in Utah. I would have to think that would affect top speed, I really dont know for sure tho. |

If you ran Maxton, I'd be able to come watch. But don't let that scare you off, come on down anyway. |

Weren't we just on a thread about newbie and rusty riders getting killed? Dyna, "I love you man" but wildlife at night is deadly and there ain't no motorcycle training for nightvision. Now I know for sure, we all have impulses and I do dumb stuff all the time. So at least try to do that when you can see where your going. The adrenilin is still flowing and I'll bet you're still grining. I wonder what psycoligists say about the, "I did it, it's over, I lived, COOL" thought process. |
