Was behind a brand new Screaming eagle RK earlier today, we were both doing about 85 or so. I was about 4-5 bike lengths back when I notice oil drops building up on my face shield, I move into the other lane & they stop. That damn $27,000 bike of his was either blowing oil out the exhaust or he has one hell of a blowby problem. You would think HD could figure out by now how to keep the oil inside the motor where it belongs & not on the rider behind you. Needless to say I didnt stay behind ole smokey very long. | ||

Haven't you heard the old HD guy when you tell him about the oil pooling up under his bike? Their response is along the lines that there had BETTER be oil under the bike otherwise it must be empty. | ||

Seriously Bill, I have ridden with & behind a lot of HD's...literally thousands of them. And that brand new SE was the nastiest, stinkiest bike I have had the displeasure of being near. | ||

Dyna...was just teasing about HD making BMC engines. This probably is not correct, but an interesting observation is that it appears that whenever HD increases the performance of their basic (antiquated) engines (SE's or Buell's) they seem to increase the associated problems. Then the aftermarket comes along and cleans up the mess. Please, no flames, I own both an X1 and a Wide Glide and have been problem free with a few minor exceptions. | ||

Nah, didnt have time. The second traffic cleared in the other lane I was gone & far far ahead of him. Just kinda freaked me out that a brand new bike costing $27K would be spewing like that. I really cant comprehend why after 100 years HD still hasnt devised a foolproof method to keep the oil inside. Head breathers with el cheapo umbrella seals & such, what a joke. I like HD's as much as anyone, but all of us who own them were robbed blind by paying so much $$ for that type of 1930's thinking. | ||

Should have done some research before purchasing, if you feel that you were robbed blind. I know that when I buy a Buell, it may have mechanical issues, but I'm willing to put up with that, and teach myself how to fix it. I'm not going into this thinking that I am going to get the very best motorcycle out there. If I spend more money on it than I would have with a Jap bike, I'm fine with that, because it's got known issues. Although the issues now are even fewer than the issues of a few years ago. If I were to buy a HD, I'd look into it and do some research. If I felt that the maintenance issues were outside of my comfort zone, I wouldn't buy it. But if they weren't enough to trouble me, than I wouldn't consider myself being robbed - it's just another expense to pay for the motorcycle you want. And obviously enough people don't think that they're being robbed blind, or else HD would have gone out of business in the 1940's, when their 1930's thinking was a decade old... People want these bikes, (HD's and Buells) for more than simple mechanical issues - it seems to be much more of an emotional thing, rather than so many other bikes out there, which are just things to purchase and ride. And I guess that emotion wins over logic for many folks. Because they sure do sell... Sean | ||

Yep, those Harleys are noisy, oil leaking, overpriced pieces of junk. I don't understand why anyone would want one. Why, you can buy a Japanese imitation for a fraction of the price, and you'd have a better bike. And those Buells are even worse. Damned Red Headed Stepchildren; they don't know if they want to be cruisers or sportbikes. You'd have to be nuts to get one. And we all know how unreliable they are. Who cares if JD Powers says they're the most trouble free bikes being manufactured today? What do they know, anyway? I think that all you poor misguided souls who bought Buells should get rid of them right away. Sell them as fast as possible, even if you have to take a huge loss. After all, you'll be doing yourselves a big favor.  | ||

Am turning 56 in a couple of weeks and definitely feel on the wrong side of 50, at least psychologically, if you get my drift. Good thing the old bod is holding up and I act (and ride) more like a wise kid than an old fart. | ||

No one is forcing 200,000 plus people a year to waste their money. These buyers purchased what THEY LIKE. I paid a lot for my Bourget too. I know exactly what it is and I like it. R1, sounds like you should look into a metric cruiser to replace your HD. I think you'd be a happier then. Faster, cheaper, etc.... Frank | ||

Had one, like the new 2003 Wide Glide better. Then again, I bought the 1988 Intruder 1400 after being totally disgusted by my old 1980 Wide Glide. Of interest, I learned to dish out the insults faster and better than I was receiving them. Glad those days are over. LMAO In all fairness, the HD product has better quality finish to it's external surfaces and only HD's cheap line of chrome plated plastic bling bling is reduced to import quality and short life expectancy. The quality of the imports plating was definitely inferior as were some other metal selections. Ergo, the lower price. Don't know if it is still true, but I won't be buying another as I am very pleased with my Harley. Won't bother commenting on powertrains and other little idiosyncracies. That is up to the respective buyer/owner. Disclaimer: This only applies to cruisers. |
