SPLASH24
this would be Deb's bikini, cupping the headlights on her Speed Triple. i'm proud to say this was my idea, a creative stroke of genius fueled by mass consumption.

this was shot outside Bob and Deb's motel room, which had evolved into Party Central that night. there were at least a dozen of us, from two countries, all suitably lit on all manner of intoxicants, and when cuzzin' Bob grabbed Deb's keys and turned on her headlights, well, we laughed and giggled until i thought we were all gonna do a big group-piddle right there in the parking lot. the deal loses a lot in the translation (you REALLLLLLY shoulda been there), but it was one of the funniest things i've ever seen, and having shared the moment with a bunch of like-minded SPLASH'ers made it all the more special.

ps: for those of you who in previous posts seemed to be indicating that you had a nipple fetish (you know who you are), note the, um, er, realism in the above pic... : )

the rest of Friday night was a blur, and, fortunately, didn't make it onto film. you REALLLLLLLY shoulda been there.

this would be the following morning, back at Horseshoe Lake Park, during the rider's meeting.
SPLASH25
i counted 43 bikes in the parking lot, with riders from two countries and at least four states (and even more, if you count altered states...)

this is the very spot that Erik Buell stood and spoke to the group back in '97 for Blue Groove Northwest, before we all departed for the wonder that is Mount St. Helens.

this ride has happened on the same weekend in July ever since, thanks to a magnitude of passion, adventure, and camaraderie that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

SPLASH29
Chris Taylor (holding up the condom above...) deserves a couple thousand words here for all the hard work that he put in to ensure that SPLASH '03 was a huge success, from painstakingly mapping out TWO separate routes, right on down to spearheading the rider's meeting.

in fact, this would be a great time to again recognize the efforts of Chris and Loni Taylor, Bob and Debbie Gussenhoven, and Mike and Kimberlie Wood. it takes a TON of work to pull one of these gigs off, and every year these guys work their asses off to make sure that SPLASH rocks.

thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )

whatcha got here is your basic SPLASH 2003 map, with Woodland due south of my thumb, and Packwood at top center and either 170 miles or 350 miles away, depending in part on how thick one's mental fog was this morning...

yessir, Mr. TboltEric sir, you're lookin' at em. : )

ok, some recollections from SuperSPLASH on Saturday:

1) i was The Very Last Person to arrive at the park for the rendezvous and rider's meeting, in spite of the fact that my motel room was all of maybe 200 feet away. MY! HEAD!! HURT!!! everything was in slow motion, sudden noises (and the light of day) were my enemy, and i couldn't get my eyes to point same direction.

2) i don't drink. (LIAR!) ok, i don't often drink tequila. i don't smoke (99.9% truth), except for the cigars i smoked the night before the morning after. whatever was i thinking??? : (

3) why, you may wonder, was i off shooting pix of the crowd when i shoulda been listening to Chris Taylor's words of wisdom during the rider's meeting? so hopefully no one would notice the stumbling, bumbling bitter little man with the big bulbous nose that was glowing the same color as his VFR.

and then...

4) Chris threw me some high heat when, after HIS speech, he introduced me to the crowd and invited good ol' Ferris Bueller to say a few words. crap.

you should know, if you don't already, that out of all the things in the world that i do poorly and which instills fear and loathing into my necrotic little heart, standing up in front of a group of people and trying not to sound like a mindless maroon is #1. (this is, alas, sadly, The Truth.)

crap.

it's not like i had anything prepared. and if i had, it's doubtful my mind woulda focused for that long anyway.

i don't remember exactly what i said (nor, i hope, does anyone else), but i remember that SOMETHING came outta my mouth (hmmm, i DO recall pointing at Acidburn and blaming HIM for supplying the tequila...), and for anyone who was there that thought my speech was a little, well, feeble, you're right on the money.

anyways...

"...and i wanna thank you all for coming, for Erik for starting all this nonsense in the first place, and for the Woodland Police (and the owners of the Lakeland Motel) for turning a blind eye and a deaf ear last night.

"Oh, one more thing: Last one to the top buys!" : )

Bartimus, you've been here and you should know better. as you'll recall my computer is sans a functional A-drive, CD-rom drive, or even working USB ports -- it's a wonder this ol' clunker even boots up in the mornings. imagine what it'd do to the ol' gal if i actually attempted to load some real photo editing software on her!!! : )

Das, not to worry, the thumb stays (altho i may dress it up a bit...hey Bart, what color nail polish? Molten Orange???)

Being a professional carpenter for the last 20+ years, I've managed to occasionally turn my left thumbnail a really nice Parkway Blue without use of nail polish. If you want to try it Jerry, I've got a hammer I could loan you that seems to hit about 1/2" to the left. AL

Left - Thanks for that. My dad (who passed in '84) was a carpenter and I recall several "Parkway Blue" thumbnails that he sported when I was growing up. He was a Harley rider in his youth and if he has a computer now is probably LHAO. Thanks for the smile.

man, i whacked my thumb once about ten minutes into the first day of a new job, laying sub-floor. i was trying to be as fast the "veterans", and POW! i was also trying to be cool (i had just started and all) so i kept quiet and continued driving nails. unfortunately i couldn't stop the bleeding (which seemed massive as i recall), and finally my boss noticed the red trail winding around across the new floor, at which point he started laughing so hard he was in tears. "Ha ha ha, which one of you goons painted your damn thumb?"

hmmmmm, now that i think about it, this would be the same thumb pictured above - glad the paint job wasn't permanent. : )

been busy with the RANE auction, and slackin' here, sorry.

well, so we're getting ready to pull out of the park to start the SPLASH ride, and i'm right next to desperate to hang onto somebody's shoulder for the ride out. "Chris! Who's runnin' point to the first gas stop in Cougar?!?!?" "Gussenhoven is," came the reply. "Woo hoo, great!!!" says i.

me 'n Bob have ridden a bunch, and i knew i could count on him to show the way until my head cleared.

"Hey cuzzin'! I was VERY bad last night, and is it okay if i tuck in on your 4 o'clock and hitch a tow to Cougar? Puh-LEEZ???"

well, Bob throws me an even bigger inside slider than Chris did when he asked me to utter something intelligible to the crowd during the rider's meeting.

"Ferris, like man, I was hopin' to follow YOU, I always get LOST on all them frikkin' little backroads between here and there!!!"

crap.

gulp.

holy cow.

it's been five long years since i ran this route, a "special" little number i put together way back for Blue Groove Northwest on account of it's all twisty and convoluted and gnarly and all, and now i get to come off the bench, with severe sub-cranial dyspastication, and show 42 other motorcycles The Way.

yeah, thanks a LOT, cuzzin'. ; )

i'm happy to report we didn't get lost, i'm happy to report i didn't fall over in a steaming red heap at the end of the Lewis River Bridge when we stopped to gather up the troops (but man was it ever close), and i'm happy to report that at about 30 or so miles out Bob got his bearings and whipped his Speed Triple around me and took over as official breaker-of-trail.

i was a VERY happy moto-camper at that point. : )
