"This unit, designed for grades 9-12 in social studies..." Seems a bit deep for high school but overall, a good course that would likely create a lot of good debate. Prejudice is real and cannot be denied. There are still way too many biggots in this country. The only recourse is for minorities to have more children and make whity the minority. I do think the author is missing the big picture concerning inner city crime problems. Did you see Peter Jennings' special on ABC last week about the LA police? Very interesting. People, me included are somewhat afraid to publicly hold accountable those who are most responsible for the problem. Family, education, jobs... Until gangs can be replaced with community centers and neighborhood associations, the inner city drug trade and rival gang related crime rate will remain high. But I am sure that the police are more rigorous in their attitudes towards the inner city gangs, no question about it. Are you familiar with the bias of the media in reporting/covering crimes involving minorities? They are not helping. What is your take? Blake (not a black man anymore)  | ||

I'm also sure that a significant number of LEO and court authorities suffer from some level of prejudice among their ranks. We sure have come a long way in the last 140 years though. | ||

Capitalism enables motivated individuals to improve their socioeconomic status. This principle of individualism is gradually being eroded as the racists of today are advocating that people be rewarded political privileges, based on ones race, i.e., so called "affirmative action" -- the affirmation of racist policies. Under capitalism, such evil racist policies -- carried out by the power of government -- would be outlawed. If you had two guys from whom to pick as your team mate in a two-on-two tournament and both were equally in good shape and built similarly, which would you choose, the black guy or the white guy? Me, I'd pick the black guy. Hockey? The white guy. Boxing? The black guy. Volleyball? The white guy. Drugs? Of course the top guy in the NHL at this moment is a black guy. Born in Nigeria. Race is a big issue every where and there we talk about the better it will get. Prejudice in America is far worse than most of us white folks realise and not as bad as most black folk think. DWB is a very real offense here in Milwaukee and I am pretty sure it is true elswhere. Black people put up with c r a p everyday. We all black and white can make it better. Don't let friends and coworkers get away with racist remarks. Talk, really talk, to people of other colors, cultures etc. Find out what is going on in there world. No need to demonstrate or carry on, just talk to people like people. Invite a co worker of a different race out to the bar with the rest of the group after work. (Wanna see a very nervous white guy? Invite him to a mostly black working class bar. I've been the nervous white guy.) Things are better than 50 years ago, better than 25 years ago. Lets keep the ball rolling in the right direction. | ||

Spooky, Even a lone black man in that scenario would be nervous. Here's a solution... ban same-race marriages. In a matter of just a few generations no one will be able to tell what we are, black, white, whatever. And if that becomes retroactive... dibs on Halle Barry!  | ||

Can I come out and play on this thread with you boyz? Here is a thought, I owned a small manufacturing business for over 20 years. We used to hire a lot of immigrants from the IRC office. We paid them well and they had the skills we needed plus we got a nice tax break… anyhoo… I hired a fellow from Laos and before you knew it I had the whole family. Don’t get me wrong, they all put out and were by far some of the best I had. But one day I needed another worker, so the IRC office sent me a kid from Vietnam. I had a freeking mutiny on my hands! The shop stopped until I removed this kid and sent him back to the office. One of the Laotian workers explained that ANYBODY from Vietnam was a thief and swindler and they weren’t going to put up with it. Uh, hey guys… I can’t tell one from another… were did this all come from? So racism runs rampant the world over. I don’t think Black folk really have much to worry about from white folk, I do believe Blacks in general should be more concerned with our “new Americans” from the south and the eastern blocks of the world. As for me, I get pissed off every time I have to answer a sheet that asks if I’m Caucasian…. The Hispanics get there own check mark, the Black folk do as well…. Where the hell is the section for Germans???? | ||

Me and my girlfriend get stares all the time around here. I'm white (VERY white... I have red hair), and she's Indonesian. They think she's a Mexican. Mexican's are always looking at me "funny" and talking to her in Spanish. She only understands a little bit of it and they get VERY mad at her for not knowing her "native language"... | ||

while walking about Stockholm Sweden a while back, my wife and I stopped in a store that sold locally produced crafts . . . .. . I'm in lust with anything with an edge on it, and asked the lady behind the counter if she had any locally made knives . . .
