Man I am bummed beyond belief with a custom paint job I had done about two months ago. The tank blistered like one of those venereal disease pictures you see. I looked up in the knowledge vault about this and I now know that the tanks vent vapors. Whats the deal? Anyway, my painter is standing by his work and states he will do the tank again but I do not want to take this one time "gimme" and screw it up by doing another Buell tank. Does anyone know how I can get an aftermarket tank made of some other material that will fit? Or do I have to spend huge amounts of $$$ on a custom one-off? Part of the beauty of owning a Buell is the challenge of turning it into the bike you want that no one has and overcoming problems. This was just a bit too much. By the way, the bike is a 2000 M2 cyclone. Any advice or help would be really appreciated. Thanks, Paul | ||

Paul...I recently had a Buell tank repainted. The body shop I used was familiar with the Buell vapor problem (a guy there had an older model Buell with the bubbling letters). To make a long story short, he completely stripped the tank down to the raw material. He then put a barrier layer (similar to a spray-on bed liner material). He put the primer and paint over that. It cost me a little more (about $100) than a "standard job". For the short term, I decided against the custom detailing on the tank. I may decided to have it done over the next winter. Good luck!! "Pain job!" freudian slip, as I have a similar apparetnly pubescant tank in my garage . . . .. . one day, it was shiney black lookin like you could sink your arm into it . . . .. 9 hours later, looked like it had survived a case of smallpox . . . . . mennis, we wanna know what your guy used, or if he'll acept tanks via UPS | ||

I'm not so sure he wants to get into the tank painting biz. I paid ready for this $300 to have my tank done. It was between $50-$100 more than the other quotes. He told me after he finished that he should have charged me more based on the time and energy of making it great. I'll try to stop by sometime in the near future. I'd like to show him the finished product. | ||

I need to make sure whatever the stuff is that was used on your tank would work because the paint job I got cost $1900.00!!! It is an absolutely radical design with bones skulls and spider webs, beautiful earth tones and all sorts of stuff. The bike could be put in a magazine....... IF IT WASN'T FOR THE F&*#ING TANK HERPES!!! Otherwise the rest of the bike is perfect... Paul | ||

I have a 2000 M2 that a friend of mine repainted over 2 years ago and the paint is immaculate - no bubbles at all. I know for a fact that he didn't know anything about the bubbling problem; mine was the first Buell he ever saw. I am not aware of any special procedure he did, but he used DuPont paint and primer. I hate to say this (not really), but my buddy didn't charge me anything to strip and paint by bike. | ||

Try having him scuff the tank with a 220 grit, then thoroughly clean/wash using alcohol until you can take a pure white cloth and wipe it anywhere on the tank's surface and it comes back perfectly clean with absolutely no trace of any particles. Keep it dry and paint as usual. | ||

Blake, How is scuffing the tank with 220 grit and using alcohol going to keep the tank from venting vapors through the tank material and lifting the paint? I was sitting in my truck on the way to work today wondering what type of material you could add to the tank to make it impervious to this problem. My thoughts are that someone must know and have the answer. After all we have walked on the moon. Believe me I would go ahead and try your suggestion but it HAS to work the first time. I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your responses. 1313, sorry not trying to tease you. I will see if I can borrow the digital camera from work and get you some pics. Paul | ||

Can anyone give me a link to a custom made fuel tank I saw on this site I think;;. It is made of aluminium or stainless steel and is for an X1. As far as I remember it is hand made in the states and sells for approx. 900 dollars. thank you. |
