Anybody ever try anything to talk to a second rider while riding? My girlfriend is a newbie and it sure would be nice to be able to comunicate with more than thumbs up. I called the BMW dealer and for $1,100.00 they can set me up, but lets get real. | ||

I'm in the process of a home concocted solution. Motorola Talkabouts, 5 mi range: $60 Throat mics from Radio Shack: $14 Raping the plug from a Motorola phone headset cuz the originals don't work and watching an idiot with absolutely no electronic experience attempt to solder it all together, PRICELESS!  The throat mic works surprisingly well but the earpiece is crap. I'm having to replace the plug from the original unit with the motorola plug and am also on the search for an inner ear speaker with some amount of sound suppression. I'll let you know how it works out. If it does, I'll get away more cheaply than any other option on the market. Or I may just end up frustrated...  | ||

I like mine - it works very well at anything under freeway speeds, and then a wind blocker might alleviate that problem. Unfortunately it stopped charging the battery after I let someone borrow it and it got soaked. Now it's a $300 paperweight until I buck up and get another one that will charge both batteries. | ||

I used to use a Maxon fm rig w/intercom. The newer stuff is lighter, works better, & has better range. ( my old rig picked up 1/2 of portable phone calls as you drove around. good for laughs ) Hearing "There's a cop behind us!" instead of "hgdsakkeu!!!" makes an intercom worth while. headset here's a well reviewed headset, they sell connector cables to mate with most folks black box's & phones. A push to talk (ptt) switch is the only way to go on motorcycles. I always had one buddy who left his rig on voice activate, and conversation would stop & be replaced with wind/motor rush as he would hammer down, over the horizon & out of range. After the radio's cleared, mutters of "idiot", mild swearing & "wrong way genius" filled the airwaves. | ||

I highly recommend this companies stuff. http://www.collett.mb.ca/ I have the older model wireless 900 mhz stuff and it works perfectly. They are rechargeble and virtually waterproof. | ||

I'm looking at doing something like this for my ride to North Carolina this summer so that I can talk to my wife and mom in our conversion van. Being a Radio/TV Broadcast engineer gives me a small advantage when it comes to home brew solutions for this. I figure that I can run wires around my back and mount a push to talk switch on one of my handlebar levers. With waterproof connectors like Neutrik Mini XLR's I should be able to rig something up. I've already started working on it and I'll let everyone know how it goes. I do know what the best earpieces would be. There are noise canceling ear pieces that work with professional In Ear Monitors that would be perfect for this job. They are a little pricey but the cancel around 15dB of outside noise while giving you an extremely wide freq. range if you duplex the audio to a CD player or radio. JT | ||

John; please keep us posted. I bought an Autocom unit (a year ago - still not mounted  ), but the extras to have PPT and such are just too much additional gear and $$. I've heard that for FRS/GMRS radios, the Kenwoods work the best - several in my club have tried the range of radios, and they concur. Henrik | ||

Autocom Expensive but worth it. I'm very happy with my set-up. Mororcycle consumer news recently published an article about Bike to bike for less than a hundren bucks. I typed some of the info into an earlier thread, but I'm not sure where it is in the archives, | ||

I don't want to hear anyone else when I'm riding, neither do I want to talk, so just wave & point, it's saves so many rows, as you can say afterwards that you were trying to draw her attention to something you were passing. This is known as either, exit strategy or damage limitation, have fun whatever.  | ||

Collett looks like what i'm looking for. $360 for a pair is about what I was expecting until I looked into it and got sticker shock for a big time touring deal. Thanks for the info. I'm thinking, for as much as she actually rides, a couple of car phone headsets and a extra 100 minutes on the plan might do it.  Thanks | ||
