Just got my M2 back from the dealer for engine work, and now the speedo craps out on me. I took the sender out and wiped it down, there was no debris on it. The thing rolls smoothly up to 50, and then stops working, the needle returning to the peg. Any here know whether this is the sender or the speedo head? Any suggestions how to trouble shoot this? Please email buellpilot2002@yahoo.com

Thanks.

Trouble shoot the thing by replacing the $50 speedometer sensor. I've been out of Buells for awhile now and I'll bet someone more current than me will give you more details, but basically the sensor is shot. There is no particular reason for it, no justification for it, it's just the way it is.

My speedo sensor went puff 50 miles after the bike was worked on by the local dealership too.
Just coincidences I guess??

Stubby, the usual failure mode is a short period of intermittant operation (like a day or two), then the sensor goes deader then a doornail. If yours keeps working but won't crack 50mph, then you may (but may not) have something else going on.

The new part should be like $70, but fixes it forever.

The speedo sensor outputs a pulse the alternates from +5 volts to 0 volts, as each gear tooth goes by it. With a voltmeter (set at AC Volts), it should read ~3 to 4 Volts AC (RMS) while the bike is moving. (measured at screw terminal input on back of speedometer, or borrow an oscilloscope or a frequency counter). An audio setup to a ear bud speaker, should allow one to listen to it as you ride (~400 hz at 20 MPH, ~1300 Hz at 60 MPH). HD has a speedometer tester, it just plugs in where the sensor does (and puts out pulses), and allows them to check the speedo needle sweeping action. Surely, since this only takes a few seconds - they would do it for free? : )
