I just made a couple of changes to my 6,000+ mile S1, and I'm now hearing a whirring noise that I hadn't previously noticed. It doesn't matter whether the clutch is engaged or disengaged, whether or not the bike is in gear, or whether or not it is moving. The pitch of the whirring sound seems related to engine RPM. I mostly notice it at low speed (or stopped) and lower RPMs (maybe at least partially because wind noise might drown it out at speed). I don't really hear it when the bike is first started, only after it's fully warmed up. The changes I made at the same time were: 1) install the beefier primary chain tensioner 2) switch to synthetic oil (Mobil 1, automobile oil). I put 20/50 in both the engine and the primary case I've rechecked the engine and primary fluid levels, the clutch adjustment, and the chain tensioner, and all seem fine. Actually, the bike is running great, I'd swear it shifts easier now than before the Mobil 1. If anybody has experience with this scenario, I'd appreciate a word of advice. Thanks, Eric Diehl | ||

You were right. The chain definitely didn't seem too tight, around 3/8 inch play. But when I gave it a scootch more play - voila! Maybe the chain tightens up a little when it comes up to full engine temperature.. Thanks | ||

That an a few spots run tighter than others, it is always a good idea to measure it in a few spots | ||

I always remove the plugs, put the rear on stands and shift into fourth gear. You can turn over the motor by rotating the rear wheel... and check/adjust in numerous spots along the chain. I've noticed quite a difference in different spots. Check carefully until you're sure you find the tightest spot... then do the adjustment... then recheck. Mine seems a little sloppy (too loose) in spots... but it's been like that for a long time and doesn't seem to cause problems. Steve edited by smadd on April 19, 2004 |
