Well, It happened Saturday. I was riding my 99 M2 with 13K miles on a road trip and I was riding about 65 MPH, it started making a nasty noise and BANG.... Up in a cloud of smoke! Hot oil, burnt flesh, and tons of smoke..... I tossed a rod!

Anyway.... Bike dealer says it will take BIG $$$$$ to fix! Bike my be a parts bike now.....

Justin,
Any insight on the root cause of the failure?
(Hopefully sarcastic comments will be kept to a minimum from others, thanks.)
A broken rod or wrist pin or piston failure is fairly significant but can leave evidence behind to the primary cause of the failure.
Thanks for any feedback. Glad you're okay though. Sorry about the bike.

There's an XB motor on E-bay right now. Would that fit?

NO it wouldn't the XB mounts into the XB frame difrently. The XB motor actually has the swing arm mounts incorperated into the motor.

That would replace the oil tank with the swingarm oil tank, get rid of the undershock, require an upper new rear shock mount which there should be room for now that the original oil tank is out of the way. Just need to check alignment of the frame rear supports co-joinment to the new assembly.
What am I missing here?

Anybody got a totalled XB minus the front end they want to unload for cheap? You can keep the bodywork and forks and front wheel.

One guy at the shop offered me 2200.00 for the bike as it is... I think this is fair, do you?

that sounds pretty fair if your problem is more than just top end work which it kinda sounds like it is. might want to jump on that its up to you.

13K and the engine lets go is better poor, unless there's stuff we (you) don't know . . .. . 2200 for a buell without an engine is a pretty good deal

Most I've had offered on trade-in for a complete and running M2 is between $3500-$3000. You can probably come close to or better than $2200 if you part it out, but only if you want to hassle with doing all that.

Sorry man, that really sucks. I agree, $2200 would be a good deal, unless you know you will always want that M2 and want to just throw in a new crate motor.

Wonder how your oil pump drive gear looks...

That's what I'm thinking Reepi... and $2200 sounds good to me... A good down payment on a 12R : ).

i have been entertaining the idea of an M2 to put my 89 inch stroker motor in. not ready to buy today, have to wear the fresh metzelers off the sportster first. but sounds like big fun. oh,BTW sorry you nuked the engine. have you thought about an S&S stroker kit pretty easy way to get the bottom end fixed, and a HUGE boost in torque.

Mikej I am currently working on the same deal using an S3 frame. I have some working ideas for the rear engine mounting. The front mount is handled easily using one of the adapters from either American Sport Bike or NRHS. I am looking at running a seperate mounting for the swingarm or ordering a swingarm to my specs from one of the aftermarket companies. The stock XB swingarm strikes me as too short for the frame. As I get further and further through the project pics will be forthcoming.

Well, he could fix it by putting a down payment on an XB... But then he'd be like all the rest of us.

The M2 is a great bike though. Court seems to think he can prove that it's the best bike ever made (or I think that's what he said).

That sucks Justin. Big time. I'd sell it for the $2,200 if the engine is indeed toast.

You can't find a Sportster motor in a junk yard for a couple hundred dollars?

Find a junk motor and swap over your top end stuff.

Am I way off base here? How much are those motors from a yard?

And $2200 is pretty good for a bike without a motor. Hell, I can't sell mine and it runs!

I'm missing something...sounds like you just blew a motor.

(pardon the 'tude, but owners of XR-1000's become calloused to the smoke-bang procedure).

GREAT NEWS . . . you now have the opportunity to deal with some of the finest folks in the world of Buell. Get on the phone with Pammy, Aaron or any of the Badweb sponsors and get talking.

Fix the problem, ride the motorcycle.

If you let those folks that Court mentioned rebuild your engine, then you'll need plastic surgery to remove the smile from your face after you ride it.

my motor blew last year, coincidently a 99m2 with 13,430 miles on it, the oil pinion gear was in fact trashed, but it's really hard to tell what happened because there was so much piston material everywhere in my motor, at the time i had no garage so i had a local bike shop do top end replacement which included: NRHS 1250 kit, S&S cranks, andrews pushrods(1 of the rods came out bent in half almost)had the heads bead blasted to get rid of nicks and scrapes(if i had the money i would have had the heads done over)and had black diamond valves installed. all of this for $4K ouch! parts and labor... i will never sell this bike it has made me happier than any previous motorcycle i've had and has also made me a better mechanic than i thought i would ever be. at this point i have no money for any cool buell stuff for a while, but i have 850 miles on my new top end and i've started giving her a little pressure and she feels great(besides a slight rattle coming from the primary on deceleration in neutral when revved, checking that out this weekend)the front end comes off the ground in first and second and she feels real strong! well, that's my story and i'm sticking to it! i hope this helps you good luck justin

For me? . . . I'd see the combination of an "in need" Buell motor aimlessly wandering in search of the talents of one of our sponsors as a OPPORTUNITY!

Shake the despair, take the cards dealt and go get that smile.

I'd find a donor sportster motor and fix it. You could sell it and get a bigger downpayment on that XB if you still wanted to.

my question is why does a bike with only 13,000 miles lose a rod?

Regards
