Hey Daniel,

I've heard the weight watchers program is really expensive. Here's what you should do. Quit the "official" weight loss program. Trade in the Blast; and buy the bike of your dreams. . . . . . Then you will still be able to lose weight because you won't have enough money to buy groceries

Hey Chuck..

Nice idea... I have forwarded it to my wife. Lets see what she thinks.
I gave her your email address. Sorry about the hatemail :)

To all:

A while back my wife came home with a treadmill. It connects to the PC.
I started having visions of having to run on the treadmill like a hamster to generate enough electricity to run the PC and check my email etc.
I would of lost all the weight years ago if that was the case.

It turns out that you can download all these different programs and workouts with instructors on the soundtrack etc to encourage you and drive you etc..
The PC (or CD if you capture the workout and burn it to a CD) controls the gradient and speed etc to give you a good workout with the correct warmup and cool down and workout etc structured by professionals who hopefully know what they are doing.

They have loads of different programs for cardio, fitness, fat burning, pyramid etc. Over 100 different ones. And the best thing is that the workouts are all free on the web. They have programs for beginners all the way through to fitness nutter level.

One day I might even start using it for a workout instead of a clothes horse.

Only joking, I go through phases of using it for a week or so... then forgetting it for a month or two etc.

I heartily recommend these treadmills and the ifit.com system. Many different treadmill manufacturers now use ifit.com. Mine is made by Proform.

The internet based programs (free) are made by ifit.com and they can be seen at www.ifit.com (I have no connection with them). They also have some pay services and a store too which I have avoided.

I hope this is of some help to someone.

Daniel

Hey MikeJ,

Let's go riding on Sunday. Pedal power. My legs have gotten better since the 150 miles last weekend. My e-mail at home is on the fritz, so if you e-mail me at home I may or may not get it. I can get access to the badweb though. I think you should have my phone number. I was thinking of the Glacial Drumlin trail or possibly some road route that we could come up with. Let me know.

Sounds good. I need to get back on the pedal bike anyway, I'm signed up for a sprint triathlon in Chicago the end of August and I'm absolutely no way near in shape for that. If you want to do the Glacial-Drumlin (sp?) maybe I'll meet you where it crosses hwy-83 (I think it crosses 83) and I'll just ride my bike there from home. I'll post a note Saturday afternoon. I had your phone number but it's in a notebook that I've misplaced since my trip. Did you get your road bike back, or still on the MTB? 150 miles on a MTB on the road is a few miles.

Oh, just as a point of reference, my scales actually said 229Lbs. when I got back from the trip, but currently hovering in the low 230's.

Hey Mike,

My e-mail appears to be working today but I'll be out all afternoon, so I'll check for a message later either here or on my e-mail account. The Glacial Drumlin trail sounds good. I will also ride out there from home. I checked out the maps and the trail does cross 83 in Wales. Let me know a time and I'll make sure I'm there. Whatever distance you want to do is fine with me. There is a nice lake at Lake Mills(gee do you think that's why they call it LAKE MILLS?) and I think there is some sort of rest stop that we could grab something to eat at. Let me know what's up. (or you can just stop by with your new to you '95 Pearl White S2 and make my wife jealous :) because you know you've got the bug. :) )

Jerry,
How about 10am at the grocery store on 83/18, I think that's fairly close to the trail. If it's hot and humid we may just end up getting something to eat and turning around from there. :) Time to fill up the Camelback with water and the water bottles with weak Gatoraid.

Holy toledo Batman....

Been away for a while, and missed out on this great thread...

I too fight the battle of the bulge, and weigh in at a svelte (not so) 260 standing 6'5" with a 38 inch waist (but they are tight, and maybe a little south of where they should be) Tried every diet known to (this) man and have had no luck. I most recently tried that Atkins plan, which lost me 7 pounds in the first week, and then i fell off the wagon (Family picnincs, vacations, etc... excuses, i know, but i slacked) and gained it right back. I have been trying to do tae bo 3 times a week, and lift randomly, though I want to get on a regimen... my schedule is pretty hectic, so I need to find the time.

24 years old, I moved to Vermont when i was 20 (weighing in at about 255), and snowboarded and skied 150 days (or more) a year for three years. hiked and snowshoed on the other days. When i moved back to PA i weighed in at 192. Best i ever felt (and looked). Got a desk job (darned computers!) and slowly but surely started to gain, within one year i had put on 60 pounds, and have since been fighting to maintin (actually been trying to lose, but the battle has siimply helped me maintain) I wonder if the change in my activity level has prompted my weight gain? I have to assume it has, but in my current profession, i can't afford to be active for 5 or more hours a day like i had been...

Q: What to do?

Anyhow... thanks Mike, for posting this, and others for helping with the inspiration.

Count me in for the uncompetitive competition.

Tim Reiter
260 and counting.....

P.S. also had my thyroid checked, etc.. and nothing **Medically** is keeping me from losing weight... But I am having a b*tch of a time...

Tim,
A simple change in eating habits and residual activity seems to have the greatest effect. I cut out a lot of the junk food (note that I didn't say all of it :) ). Then instead of drinking soda I switched to water, and instead of a heavy diet of coffee I cut way back on that as well.
RunnersWorld.com has a good beginner run/walk program (that I need to get back onto) that only takes 30 minutes a day or so and will kick your metabolism into gear, or at least into a better gear.
Welcome to the race.

Timmy,

Biking and Tae Kwon Do. It is great for keeping you in shape and maintain great fitness. You also get the benefit of strengthening your legs, and learning a discipline. Although I am only 6'1" 187lbs, I dropped down to 170 riding 125+ miles per week, but I could not keep that up.

With Tae Kwon Do, I am learning something interesting and maintaining fitness.

No offense Kevin, but I think I have layed turds that have been bigger. (hehehe :) ) Just keep shooting towards your goal, whatever it might be.

Hey Mikej,

That bug that got me on the way back on Sunday, did sting me. I know have 1/6th of that 6 pack I've always wanted. Now I guess I'll have to go out there again and find the same type of bug to get the other 5/6 of the 6 pack.

All,

Finally made 230. Amazing what a change in lifestyle will do for you. Next is 200. Then I'll be where I was 15 years ago.

Hey,
Did you know that weight lifting or weight training adds weight instead of taking it off? Ice cream does the same thing, except that if I keep lifting weights I should eventually start to drop tonnage again, which is where the ice cream analogy unfortunately falls apart. I think I just ate my last ice cream until I get below 230 again. Oh well, here we go again. Let's see, Arvel hasn't hit 200 yet, and hasn't posted since September, so he probably hasn't hit 220 yet, so I still have a chance to "win the race" :). But then winning wasn't the goal to begin with, it was the health and conditioning issues, but I still want to win.

Hey Arvel, I've got a beer with your name on it if you've hit 220Lbs already.

Dan,
I actually bought some frozen yogurt the other night. They made me smuggle it out of the store in a brown paper bag and leave via the liquor dept. door so's no locals would see it. I once even tried to buy some of those turkey-franks, but the butcher started sharpening her cleaver with an evil look in her eyes so I dropped the package back into the cooler and made my way carefully towards the saurkraut in the next aisle. She didn't put down the cleaver until the 'kraut was in the basket. That was a close one, it was. Whew.

Brad,
I've got a bag of sliced cheese in the fridge. In fact I think I'll go have a roastbeef & cheese sandwich then head off to school. Hmmm, I wonder if Blockbuster has any Wallace&Grommet movies with them on one of their motorcycling and cheese searching adventures.

Here's a few suggestions from someone who has finally achieved the six pack!

Haven't checked out these sites for a long time and only just saw Chuck's message about Weight Watchers being expensive. Now for the good news:
1. It really works!
2. There are cheap ways to do it! My wife (she of the six pack) ordered a Weight Watchers CD-ROM through their website. Heaps cheaper than attending meetings, yours for ever, etc. etc.

Other tips: Residual activity and just plain lifestyle is the key. If you always park away from the shops and walk; skip using remote controls (and preferably TVs, as well!); play with the kids/dogs/girlfriend/whatever... then even on those days when you don't do your "formal exercise" like running or weight training, you're still a winner.

Oh yeah, and always eat breakfast. Healthy stuff like rolled oats or not-very-sugary cereal, fruit and yoghurt - no doughnuts for brunch! Eating raises your metabolic rate, which has dropped away over night.

What else can we say? She of the six pack has dropped about 15 pounds and is aiming to lose another 5 or so. Weekends away on the bikes (she rides XL1200Sport, I'm on an S3T) involve enough of a muscle workout that what you eat doesn't matter much. Incidentally, she's been weight training to cope with chucking the Sportster around and if the scrapes in the Screamin' Eagle muffler (and the saddlebags!) are anything to go by, it works.

Hey MikeJ.-
Maybe you can help me. I used to race bikes, mostly road. One of my favorite ones was the Firehouse 50 at Grandview.
My 16yr old wants to race but we are having trouble chasing down some for him to try before he goes the licensed route. He is strong as an ox, I was fairly good and he can ride away from me like I'm standing still.
Is there a website for WI races or can you get me a flyer? The hardest race I ever did was a century out of Onalaska for Octoberfest. I had just gotten a new bike that came with a 12-21 freewheel. All through the race guys kept saying something about 'the Killer Hill'. In Iowa we just don't have mountains so I figured 'no problemo'. Well I found out what 'the killer' was all about. It was at the 75mi. mark and by the time I got to the top of it with that 21 sprocket I realized that last 25mi. was going to be one of the longest I've ever ridden.
I'm looking for non-sanctioned races in either WI or MN. He did a mountain bike race a couple of years ago and had a blast so either road or off-raod will work.
Thanks,
Mike

Iamike,
Here's the two primary ones I use:

WiCycling USCF road races and crits
Wisport Public series, road races, time trials

Also, some of the cycling team web sites have links to local races they do. If you need more then let me know and I'll rummage around my browser bookmarks at home.

If he's at all interested in Cyclocross my LBS (local bike shop) owner races USCF stuff, some crits, MTB races, and cyclocross. Next time I'm by there I'll ask him for some website addresses as well.

Losing weight?...and I've been trying all my life to gain some weight. I've been working out since I was 11, weight training for the past several years, doing a bit of running, jump roping, I hit the bag every now and then, a lot of time on BMX bikes and mountainbikes, and been eating everything in sight all my life. I'm 5'6", 170lbs. I like it. Works for me.

Rick, you and I have the same problem, I eat everything thats not nailed down (5 squares a day plus snacks!) and I'm still at 160... which wouldn't be to bad if I weren't 6'1"...

How do i exercise with my Buell? Easy, I have a Blast and a bad habit of not checking the petcock... I'm sure glad that thing only weighs 330lbs, cuz pushing it 1-2 miles to the gas station is getting easier...

I weighed 130 pounds when I graduated from high school. Very skinny considering I was 6'1".
Now 10 years latter I weigh 200 pounds. I would like to get down to 180 for those long trips. Easier on the butt.

Stick with it Timmy2shoes! Don't stay in Ketosis, but don't stray far out of it either. Drink LOTS of fluids, a litre of ice water burns up something like 35 calories (to heat it up to body temperature). Drink 5 of them, and thats a decent snack burned up. It also helps prevent kidney stones from the protien rich diet.

A lot of that first 20 pounds was water weight, but not all of it. A pound a week ought to be possible. It may take you a year to hit 200 pounds, but I bet it took a lot longer then a year to get to 260.

Yummm. Meat :)

Becareful with ice water. Yes id does burn calories. BUT if you are already working out, tired as hell and are sweating like a Hooker in church don't drink ice water. It will put your body into a mild shock, cause it has to heat up the water, while working out drink warm water. Sound ridiculus but it is true.
