As you might know, the Baker gears are the old low contact/whiners that HD has now discontinued for about 8 years. 6th, however, is the thin toothed, high contact of present day. If memory serves me right, it was in 1995 that the change took place so the 5th set (the output) in your bike should be high contact also.
My Baker has been performing flawlessly since its installation but I only have about 2000 miles on it. The bike is now retired and has not been run for 8 months. As I remember, the transmission can be heard more but shifts more smoothly. Because the output is reduced in this design, the 6th gear diameter is very large in order to produce a .83 (an overdrive) ratio. This forces the transmission to be going faster than the engine in when placed in 6th. This is what an overdrive is all about. The problem lies with the reduced output that forces the transmission to spin even faster.
Look at possible contact of the 6th set with the door an look at the door bearings and needle bearings in 5th.

Jose, will do,thanks for the input.I will admit to putting some serious HP to this thing as it had about 20 dyno runs and 8-12 runs at Bonneville.More than half of those with the turbo.

Jim,

If you don't mind me asking....how much did you get your Baker for?

Lee, when my bike's market value had dropped to about $4,000, I spent 2K on the Baker and 2K on Marchesini magnesium wheels. I had spent 4K on TS heads, Nallin porting, Hurricane pistons, AAC jugs and a SE camset. For 8K, the price of the bike (10K) and a couple other grand on various and sundry things (CRG levers, Banke shifter, Jagg oil cooler, etc.) I now have a rather unique and very good performing bike, that I do not use anymore. This hobby does not make sense financially.

any hobby/love affair is bound to be a loosing proposition in terms of cash (with very few exceptions -- things wiht engines hardly ever are exempt from this) . . . buy/build/ride what you enjoy, figure the smile/dollar ratio, and keep grinnin

Estoy de acuerdo Road_thing.

You are right bomber. There is an Australian Badwebber who lives in holland. He has outdone me big time with a single sided swingarm, perimeter brakes an a turbocharger.

Fireman:

I neglected to mention that 5th is not a gear. When in 5th the output is connected directly form the engine w/o passing through the countershaft. The 5th gear set still spins the countershaft but only while is freewheels on the all the gears, unselected. When you shift into 6th power again flows through the CS where the rattle is likely present.
