Color-coating the inside of the pipes--that's a nice touch!

I have 2 comments for this thread.

1. What is the deffinition/differnce between bobber, chopper.

2. Why do so many guys build hard tails? Are you not intending on ever riding this bike? Makes no sense to me.

But both bikes are very cool. I certainly wish I had the finances to be able to build or buy one...probably a chopper though, not so sure a bobber is my style.

From wiki and pretty accurate
------------
A Bobber is a style of custom motorcycle that took shape in the 1950s and continues to be built today. Bobbers are related to choppers in that they both represent a minimalistic approach where everything is stripped from a bike that is not readily needed. This includes the characteristic rigid frame and shortened ("bobbed") rear fender.
The principle difference between bobbers and choppers is that bobbers are typically built around unmodified frames while chopper frames are often cut and welded into shape. They also often lack most of the chopper's aesthetic characteristics such as chromed parts and elongated forks. Thus, bobbers are fairly easy to create from stock motorcycles and are generally hand built.

In the old days a bobber was a bike with all the excess removed.[incl. "bobbing" shortening the fenders]
A chopper went further and changed some of the major components.

Bobber's were more or less self creating...as individual parts vibrated off and were lost...you told everyone "it's a bobber!

I'm building it and I'm calling it a Bobber.

Mainly because it is not all stretched out. Sure you could call it a chopper... Especially if you were building it...Hahahaha

No I'm not intending on riding this one very far. This one is for putting around town and lookin' good, Stylin' and Profilin'.

The Electra-Glide and 1125R are for the other types of riding that I love to do

The strict definition of a bike being a chopper does not include the idiotic long raked out forks.
You can call your bike a bobber, no one would care.

I'm not sure why everyone says you can't ride a hardtail very far. My hardtail suzuki has springs under the seat and actually is very comfortable to ride. I have no real problem putting a couple of hundred miles on it in a day. It is better on long rides than my x-1 due to seating position.

City, what was that bike in it's former life?

I started to chop a 74 CB750. I had a Cycle Exchange frame, etc. I got laid off and had to sell it.

LOL Saintly rides his cross country every year and more than keeps up with the sport riders around here. Obviously not the norm for some Hardtail riders but to group them all together....

When I was assigned to motorcycles on the police department. We worked 3 shifts, 24 hours a day. I weighted 250 and shared a bike with a senior man who weighed 160.
The Duo-Glides we rode had a rear suspension, but most of the travel was in the sprung seat. When I got on the bike the seat bottomed out.
Most of the riding was on fairly good roads, but at the end of the day I, often, had sore kidneys.

Don't think I'd want a hard tail.

At the Smoke out in NC they have a contest rideing from California to NC. The bike has to be a hardtail,no windsheild, and no hard bags. They have about 25 riders who finish.

It started life as a 1987 Honda Rebel 450, the heads just got back on, they are now pushed to 602cc's, put a set of Scrambler pipes on her, next step will be bolting on the sportster tank, bicycle seat, and trailer fender, with ammocan battery box.
pics as they happen.

I would have to argue that is a "custom bike".A bobber is basically a stock bike that is stripped down.A chopper starts with a stock frame &,get this.........is chopped.Still it looks like a good start for a nice bike.
And hardtails that are set up right are not as bad a ride as most think.I have put 10k to 15k a year on hardtails in the past. Some 500-600 mile days too.
I know some here have no use for such bikes, but I think I love the all. They all are fun in there own way.
Good luck on the build.

My last build.I had $5000 in it.

Damn Dfish! I like. I've got an ironhead I'm mostly gonna keep as a stock rat bike but I've often considered making it a rigid very similar to that. Good work.

Its essentially the bike I had in highschool (the same model, not the same bike) The build budget is set for $1000
I bought the running bike for 400, stripped all the parts off er, and sold them for 200, I had the Sportster tank from another project, the seat was 87 bucks, the exhaust was 100 but 50 to fab, sold the stockers for 75, the ammo can is 38 bucks, the handle bars were 5, a new battery is going to be 40, trailer fender was 38. All work that I cant do is being traded out for beer pizza and other odd jobs. I will keep her below the $1000 mark.
the heads cost me 400 bucks, but I traded out for a flat of ammo reloads so I am back to zero sum there
oH and the 13 inch Sportster Shocks came from the last XL rebuild, my chunky old butt needs the suspension

So, is a Lightning a bobber? Clue me in. Isn't it fairly stripped and what's it got you don't need? What's to strip off? Front fender and that little shield thingy?
