I'm practicing on the range where I took the lee parks class a few weeks ago and I just got my left knee down. Just thought I'd share.

Time to get the right down now.

Every time I see that pic of my knee... I wish I had a chip for dipping....

Did you buy leathers?

Now that you know where the ground is at, you can go further.

Putting it all together to get the knee to touch, for the first time, is a huge accomplishment. I found the knee acts as a feeler-gauge, when everything is just right, your knee will touch down, skimming the tarmac. At that point you have a new feeling for stability, and can work your body position around to change your lean angle, as well as your position in the corner.

Keep practicing or else your body will forget where that point is and you'll have to relearn it all over again!
That said, I have never touched down while riding on public roads, I never even try. The focus required to reach, hold, and modify that position, blinds you from everything else around you, and is very intimate.

Save that sh!t for the track, less chance for collateral damage!

Sounds like your practicing in the right place, have fun!

Wolfie,

I picked up a pair of cortech hrx series 2 pants. They're a leather/ textile mesh pant with knee slider attachment points.

I plan to buy a full set of leathers before I hit the track, but I still wanna get in better shape first. My latest plan to do that is hire a personal trainer to force myself to take fitness more serious.

Chips for dipping! That would probably pass until you got salt in the bowl!

Here's the evidence. Sorry no pic of me actually doing it, I was by myself. Next time I practice I'll be sure to have someone snap a pic.

Not to be a total goober, but this is an exciting day for me.

Hey, I got my right one down too.

That was with a 7" ground clearance.

We'll see how I do on a lower bike this time.

I got both knees down and elbows too on 6/20/09 and I'm still recovering from it.

I had some pretty good salsa bowls on the left side.

Well done Badlionsfan! That's really cool.
I'm on a bit of a mission to get back into track days and hopefully touch knee down by the end of the year : ). Looking for leathers at the moment and doing track day in October or November. Would Friday 13th November be a bad choice? ; )

What sort of "range" are you practicing on? A big open area? Or some sort of track?

The local metric bike dealer has a dedicated range that they use to teach the msf basic rider course and now the lee parks total control class. It's basically a big open black top triangle, about 100x200 feet or bigger maybe. It's painted with all the markers for the cones and such. I'm friends with the guy who runs it, so he allowed me to set up and practice on my own.

If you're on the knee down quest, I strongly recommend getting the book by lee parks, total control. The class is basically taken directly from the book.

There is a clover leaf exit that I take daily that I could get a knee down in. All I would have to do is lean that leg out... however I am only wearing jeans. Its awful tempting to walk into work with a hole in my pants.

BTW Congrats on the knee down.

That's a milestone in your skill set.

Remember, on U.S. style roads, ( driving on right ) a left hand turn, and an inside line in your own lane, has your head at between headlight & windshield height in the oncoming lane. Treat the center line like a concrete wall.

Good advice.

Cool. Not really any big open paved areas around here like that, and to me most of the local roads are too narrow to even consider knee down, though I've seen it done a couple of times.

I have the Lee Parks book... And a couple of Keith Code books... And the Nick Ienatsch book... I need to re-read Total Control, but really it's time for me to get out on the track and practice : D
