The 3+1 bands (3 instruments + singer) really are a separate category again, but just a few not mentioned so far that happen to be some of my fav bands:
Jane's Addiction
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rage Against The Machine
Audioslave
edit... and Alice In Chains

Pauly - my attitude to torrent downloads is pretty much the same as yours. I use it to check stuff out, and if I like it I buy the cd.

Back to trio's that have only 3 members...

Good call on Everclear and Goo Goo Dolls : )

So... NEW 3-piece bands? Any thoughts?

Johnny Winter (always like him better in a 3-piece format)
James Gang

The Presidents of The United States of America

Firehose (not to be confused w/ Firehouse). Mike Watt is an incredible bassist.

+1, Les Paul Trio, RIP Mr. Paul : (

+1, Rush- Lemon, how in the hell has your musical edumackation omitted one of the greatest bands of all time? With one of the best drummer/composer/serious RIDERs of all time, Neil Peart? You need to get the 30 DVD and Chronicles, do some catching up...

Now, there's a favorite 4 piece blues outfit of mine- drummer, bassist, and 2 guitarists who can burn a riff like nobody this side of the Allman bros- go check out Motor City Josh. If you can order his latest tribute CD to Howlin' Wolf, you'll have a hard time taking it out of your CD player. Worth the effort to get, even if you're in the wrong hemisphere...

Garonteeed.

If you are a fan of the bass guitar, I definitely second Firehose, but we can't forget The Minutemen.

Creed, Audioslave, Anthrax, and Smash Mouth aren't 3 piece...just so ya know!

3-piece plus singer - we kinda got sidetracked, you know how that happens round here ; )
Over the weekend I'll be checking out a few of the bands that have been mentioned - thanks all!
(Yeeees, I'll be checking out Rush : ) )

Had practice with the band last night, and we found "the tone" . We can get the sound I was looking for as a 3-piece : D .

3 piece PLUS singer or INCLUDING singer?

I'm confused. U2 should be on the list, no?

I meant we'd got sidetracked to the 3+1 bands.

My original query was, and still is, about pure trio's like Cream or Rush or Primus or Green Day.
My reason for asking is whether I've missed any bands that have a "heavy" sound with only one guitar. Seems I've missed a few : )

If your looking for heavy sounding 3 piece you could check out Chevelle.

I see your in Australia, do you know if Silverchair is still around? They were a three piece from there.

I checked out Chevelle for the first time on myspace last night - yep, that's what I'm looking for, pretty cool : D

I think Silverchair may be on hiatus of sorts... again...

The Ramsey Lewis Trio (yeah I know I'm an old git) but go find some of his covers, they're outstanding.

If you're into Rockabilly it has to be "The Rock'n'Roll Trio".

& if soul is your thing how about The Isley Brothers.
