This morning just before dawn, I was assigned to road guard duty at work. Road Guard can mean a lot of things at different times, but in this case I blocked traffic on a small road on base that runs directly behind our flight line, while one of our jets did high power maintenance turns. We do maintenance turns on the ground to check for potential malfunctions before they happen in the air, and if a vehicle were to drive down this particular road while a jet is turning at high power.. well that would just ruin somebody's day.

Luckily I rode the bike to work last night!

So for almost an hour I sat on Betty, and watched the sun come up as four General Electric high bypass turbofans roared at full power maybe 300 feet from me.

Some days I hate this job. This wasn't one of them : D

Now this is a little old, but there's nothing like standing next to an F-4 on the waist catapult while it's at full afterburner. The sound goes through your body! It's even better during a night launch. Much fire and noise and the POW he's gone!

How does it compare to a Top Fuel bike when the light turns green? I haven't been around that since '78, so it must be even more fantastic now.

Phillip, did you have a cone flash light to complement the vest? If not, then you weren't "100% Road Guard" ... at least for the Army. I used to have to do that as a private during PT hours if we were on Staff Duty or CQ... weren't no jets though, just a bunch of dudes running up and down Ardennes Road. Sounds like you made it fun though.

Sounds cool, glad you got to sit your bike all night listening to the roar (what a bummer it would have been to stand around all night just wishing you'd bothered to ride)!
