Dear Mr. H-D,
Why is it that I can get any chrome, useless trinket for any H-D made in your dealerships but I can't get a basic part for my Buell. The sign out front says Buell, but if I need a bearing or screw your poor parts guy says " I can order it". Well I can order it too. I came to the f'n dealership so I didn't have to. WTF? That is all.

Dear Andreas,

Harley Davidson is a publicly traded business. We have an obligation to our shareholders, employees and customers to make a profit.

Since we sell about 250,000 Harley Davidson Motorcycles every year in the USA, and about 5 or 6 thousand Buells, I am sure you will understand that Buell sales don't amount to a bucket of warm spit in our business plan.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if Erik Buell wasn't such a nice guy, we wouldn't even fool with them.

Why don't you see if you can find an internet site called Bad Weather Bikers, find one of their sponsors, and order your stuff over the internet like every other Buelligan does.

We would both be better off if you stay the hell out of our dealerships, savy?

Hope that helps.

Sincerely ,
Mr. Harley Davidson Jr.

Most dealers will carry a limited amount of common wear and crash items. If a random bolt, screw, or bearing is needed, they'll only have it if someone else needed one recently too, and it came in a multi-pack.

That's the way it is with all makes. They are dealers, not warehouses.

Last time I was at a "Buell" dealer a salesperson tried talking me into an 1125 model since the "smaller engine" would be better suited for an inexperienced rider than one of the aircooled 1200's.

I was amused and disappointed, but not angry.

NOTE: I obliged the sales team by taking their CR out for a spin, but in the end rode home on my 1200 ; )

Don't these sales people ride, the two Buell dealerships in Portland I deal with know the difference, and when they are trying to get me to go on a long test ride I know it is so they can go ring its neck too.

I have two favorite dealers. I would say 85% of the time they have what I need. There are others I pass right by and wouldn't even buy so much as an o-ring from them. Some dealers are cool toward Buell, and others just plain suck. You just gotta find the good ones.

Short letter to Buell with some hard-won advice:

Dear Mr. Buell,

Two points you need to keep in mind:

1) kick ass
2) take names

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Steve Slaughter

"Chrome Don't Get You Home"

That would be a great t-shirt. Kind of like one posted awhile back:

"If Loud Pipes Save Lives, Imagine What Learning to Ride That Thing Would Do"

Better yet, one on the front and the other on the back.
