Girlfriend's bike. 2006 Ninja 250. Was running great, but last time it was out it wouldn't idle without some choke. It would just putter out and die unless you held the throttle open or put some choke on it. Tried playing with the idle speed, but when I turned it up enough to idle it would rev down real slow, so that isn't it. Any ideas? | ||

Lotta miles? Low speed jet or jets? Sunny had almost EXACTLY the same thing on her VF500 and when she pulled the carbs, the low speed jets were farcked on 2 of the 4 carbs. | ||

Only like 1700 miles, carbs haven't been messed with, and it ran like a champ the last time it was out (maybe a month prior). | ||

Sounds silly, but check the plugs. My old wing used to get really upset if you left the choke on a bit too long and would foul out the plugs without any warning. Acted the same as you describe. | ||

Same thing with my old 1100 Katana. It was really sensitive to dirty plugs and even slightly old fuel. | ||

Yeah - I'd sure as heck check the plugs before I'd pull the carbs! Simplest first. | ||

Well, thinking it might be a clogged up jet or something, I just started it up, let it get to temp, and revved the piss out of it a bunch and she's good as new. I'll pull the plugs once it cools down. Gotta take of all that body work to get to them I think. | ||

When my VTR did that, it was the carbs. Be sure to drain the bowls when you winterize it. | ||

I just sold the wife's Ninja... we had the SAME issue on her 07. I ripped the carbs off and cleaned the foo-shizzle out of them with Berryman's Chem Dip and I still couldn't get it to idle right. I ended up taking it to the shop and they got it done up right and replaced the jets. BTW, taking them off (carbs) is NOT fun. | ||

Check the boot between the carb and the motor. If you have to add choke to keep it running then it seems as though you are getting too much air. Try spraying some carb cleaner on the boot and see if the revs go up. If so then you definitely have a air leak. | ||

Be sure to drain the bowls when you winterize it. Not a chance. Fill the tank with gas, add Stabil, run for a bit so the Stabil-ized gas is in the carb, shut it down and close the petcock. The Stabil keeps the gas from gumming. Running it dry or draining the bowl leaves the possibility of condensation - big no no. She may not be keeping this thing much longer because she rides it so infrequently. | ||

If it's running better now you had better throw some fuel treatment in there. Pick your favorite kind (manhatan oil LHP is mine) to help clean up the system. If she's going to be going that long between rides throw some stabilizer in there too. The wonderful fuel these days starts to varnish in as little as 30 days. | ||

Running it dry or draining the bowl leaves the possibility of condensation - big no no Had it for 18 years. The only times I had trouble with it was when I didn't do this... YMMV, FWIW, Yada Yada | ||

Mid - I know there are two schools of thought of this, so no sense in getting into it. I'm also of the thought that if the bike is going to sit for less than 6 months, you don't really need to do anything to it. I stopped "winterizing" bikes a few years because mine don't sit for any longer than 3 1/2 months or so. | ||
