Sorta a shot in the dark, but I am planning to ride from central Cal to South Lake Tahoe tomorrow thru the "backroads" of the Sierras.

The only real decision I see is whether to take Hwy 4 or Hwy 88 across the mountains...any suggestions based on traffic, road conditions or if one is just better for a bike run?

Also, any other tidbits or advice for cool stuff in the general areas would be appreciated.

I don't know about 88 but Laurie and I just rode 4 from Lake Tahoe. The pass is at 8700 feet and extremely twisty at the top. Nice. There are lakes at the top to kick back. The eastern side is steeper so it is more fun to ride Lake Tahoe -> central Cal. Highway 88 is probably the same.

Have fun.

Thanks for the input. I have never been thru there. I am very much looking forward to the adventure.

Both are about the same. I prefer to come up from the east because the eastern side of the mountains are so steep. Hwy 88 even has a couple of first-gear switchbacks; the turns are so tight and steep.

Hwy 395 north towards Carson City is a sweet cruise.

If you really want to try some back-roads hit 88 to Mormon Emigrant trail to silver forks road which comes out on 50. I rode it a couple of months ago. Lots of great photo ops along the river. If your lucky you might see a forest service truck, probably no one else on Silver Forks. Lots of forest service roads too if you really feel like exploring.
I got off on some sweet single track until I figured that probably wasn't to smart on a loaded Uly by myself.

Tuono Joice & I get up there 4 or 5 times annually
on our way from SF Bay Area to Carson City

RE: Hiways 4 & 88

either [or both] roads are great,
and they get pretty close at altitude -

connected by Hiway 89 IIRC

consider going up &/or down each of the grades
leading from CA & NV up to the ring roads surrounding the lake
