It's like they were celebrating "National Leave Your Brain At Home" Day...

Zane:
This happened the other day here in the Omaha area. When I heard them say 188mph I had my doubts about it but in reading the story in your post link they mention 1300cc Suzuki so it could have been a Hayabusa. That makes 188mph certainly possible. The only thing that doesn't quite fit is the single exhaust on the bike in the garage. I suppose it could have an aftermarket exhaust.

I see a lot of 'Busas with single aftermarket exhausts, so I'm pretty sure that's what was in the garage. I think there's only two Suzukis capable of that top speed, and it doesn't look like a GSX-R1000. Even then, the new ones are governed to 186 from the factory, though that isn't rocket science to defeat.

Yeah, most of the older crown vics and caprices top out around 124.

188mph? Yeah, it would have to be a 'busas.

I can't even image 188mph on four wheels, let alone two. The rider must clank when he walks.

But that speed on the streets is industrial strength stupid. If anything went wrong there wouldn't be enough left of him left to fill a coffee can.

More likely his head whistles when the wind blows.

188 is stupid fast on the street...to many ways to crash and burn...but it's not THAT fast under controlled conditions, like at a race track...I haven't been 188, but I have been close...171 in the quarter : ) If THAT bike had more gear it would have easily gone 200+ ....THAT'S a RIDE!

A STOCK 1125 will get you in the 165 zone...a stock ZX10r will get you in the 180 zone....unless they changed the rules...the ZX14 and 'Busa are regulated to 186...or were last I heard.

A soon as you plug one of the gizmos that defeats the lower gears ignition retard in a 'Busa or Z14, the speed limiter is gone too. Then it goes as fast as, well...as fast as it goes. My understanding is that is north of 200 mph for a healthy one.

If I was on a bike going that fast, it would take two weeks to get my rear end unclenched enough to let go of the seat.

I'd rather go 35mph in a nice tight turn rather that 150mph in straight line.

I would like to stretch one out just for grins n giggles...at a track...with steering dampeners...very, very carefully set up. That would be a hoot.

I always find salt flat racing interesting. It sounds like it would be easy to take a Busa to the flats and easily get going way past 150 mph. It just aint so though.

I agree with Zane. Traveling through TN, NC, SC & GA I never had so much fun in 2nd gear. I wouldn't be surprised if on some days I never even hit 4th gear.

All my go fast experience is on pavement...my understanding is the salt is a whole different animal...not only are the atmospheric conditions a challenge...the salt lacks good traction and is very treacherous...my hats off to all the salt racers...

FYI:

Late model Busas and the zx14 have a secondary rev limiter that kicks in @ 186 indicated. With a trip to radio shack or ebay this is defeated. Refereed to as a "T.R.E.". From my research it is hard to hit a true 200mph on a stock busa with the TRE installed. Indicated speed is another thing.

Heard a story from Dave Matson, who holds a 225mph record on his nitro 1600cc Vincent, that he hit a bump at Bonneville at 235 and got into the airstream and it peeled him right off. Just (!) broke both wrists and was back at it the next year.

If I remember right, no gaurantee on that, the early Busa years were ungoverned because Suzuki wanted the top speed title. So they bucked the Japanese manufacturers gentlemans agreement for a few years then went back and said sorry or something.

the top speed limit isn't a gentleman's agreement. it's an import regulation.

it is however as mentioned easily overcome

How fast did you manage to make it go?

yes, early busas had no restrictions.

"the top speed limit isn't a gentleman's agreement. it's an import regulation."

Nope. IRRC, its a gentleman's agreement of 300kph (186mph) indicated between the big four of japan. No regs/laws I know of.

The "Fastest" production bike is the MV Agusta F4. That manufacturer did not participate in the gentleman's agreement. Not the "quickest" (06+ busa) but the "fastest" no speed limiter.

Same with the one time Japanese gentlemans agreement on hp for cars of 280. They have finally gotten past that.
