Leave it to CA for a convoluted system!

If you didn't know your plates were stolen (it happens) it's easy to prove in court (from the pictures) that the plates are on the wrong car (most of the time). They will still make you go to court to prove it though.

I've always wondered if you installed one of those laptop screen privacy "lens" (I can't remember the proper name) over your license plate if it would work. The plate would be readable directly behind the bike, but not readable at an angle....

I think they are $40-$50, but big enough you could do a car and bike plate from the same one.

They can work, if the camera angle is far enough off center line.
But it's illegal to cover your plate with those here.

Toona, they tried something like that on Mythbusters. Long story short, at least the one they tested in their test conditions, the plate was still 90% visible.

A cover made from one of those materials that changes transparency under a small voltage would be your best bet.
But that's still illegal here.
You cannot have the plate covered by anything here. Clear or not. Nor can it be obstructed or at anything but the prescribed angle. You can be cited for the plate being blocked by mud or a ball hitch. Most get away with it because most LEOs don't feel like writing the cite.

Froggy, I saw that episode, but don't remember them actually using the screen filter.

They used some kind of spray paint that was supposed to do the same thing, without success.

There was two episodes, one was a revisit, I need to check and see if it was that one. I do recall the result was a distorted last digit, but it was still good enough that you would of gotten a ticket.

http://mythbustersresults.com/episode73

quote:

A speed camera cannot see through a lenticular lens plate cover.

busted

While designed to distort the plate from an angle, all or most of the letters of the plate were still identifiable in the tests. Also, the legality of such a device was questioned.

I got the episode on disk somewhere, I can rip the segment : )

Many years ago I met a guy who's Hayabusa sported a hinged license plate mount. Flipping a lever on his handlebar caused the plate to fold up under the seat.

DEFINITELY illegal, but intriguing. Of course, it only works when you KNOW where the cameras are.

Another variation on the hinged license plate at: http://crotchrocketnecessities.com/index.html

Design flips up "to reduce drag" at ~70/80 MPH, then returns to normal at lower speed.

For closed course/off-road use only, of course.

And here I thought that it was my baggy shorts and flip flops that was holding me back?!?

In Pa. it is illegal to put ANYTHING that covers ANY PART of the license plate. Including those dealer rims/trims. Cops just don't bother about it unless you really tick them off. Getting stopped with a full plastic cover on the plate DOES automatically get you ticketed as my brother quickly learned. And the cop was just wandering down the street looking for free donuts. Stuck the ticket under the wiper.
