Well this week I had the opportunity to travel to St. Anthony at the top of the Island.

Knowing that we could be seriously snowed in on the highway I went and rented a 2004 Ford F-150 4X4 Super Crew Truck. Woooo Hooo could that thing ever haul ass!!!!!!! Talk about a redneck truck in the making, all I needed was the shotgun rack in the back window and some hurtin' songs.

Sorry CJ about the redneck comments, I know how much you idolize rednecks!!!!!

I took some pictures along the way starting with where I went.

stjohnstostanthony

On the first leg of the trip from where you turn off the main highway to turn up the Northern Peninsula you hit Gross Morne National Park. There are mountains there and some awesome scenery. Even in the winter this place is spectacular.

Enjoy the photos.

The first few are of the road leading up the coast. Its listed on the maps as Route 430.

And these are shots of the Labrador Coast - I am not sure what the distance is but you can see the Mainland of North America from the upper tip of the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. Its almost tempting to walk across - but where would you go once you got there!!!!Nothing but Cold Cold Wilderness!!!!

How about that place for Camping!!!

The photos do show that the Strait of Belle Isle is frozen over with Slob Ice, from about January to Mid-May of each year that part of Labrador is cut off from daily ferry service therefore people must stock up on supplies before this bay ices over. You can always fly stuff in but the cost is very expensive.

Next are some photos of Route 430 itself and how they clear the snow from it to make it passable in the winter. This is the main route to get to this part of the island and two days before I got there the highway was closed as even snow clearing equipment was having trouble clearing the snow drifts. After about 3 days the crews got to the point where you could drive through, it was one lane driving in many places.

That reminds me of Alaska... Now I'm home-sick.

Don't know why... I haven't been there in ten years.

The Arctic winter is as beautiful as anything on earth. At the same time it's a fickle mistress that will freeze you out as soon as you get the chance and you'll be wishing you were in Hawaii.

M1, maybe you should go home and visit the parents. You'll hardly recongize Anchorage and the area between Eagle River, Palmer and Wasilla has grown a lot as well. But there is still no doubt that you're in Alaska.

I'm sure... I grew up in Wasilla. Out Knik road to be exact.

I went back once a few years ago, but the trip from Anchorage Intl. to Wasilla and then back was at night so I didn't really see anything in between. Wasilla has changed a lot though. I guess I should have said I haven't lived there in ten years.

Jeeze - Newfie, ya made me start shivering! BRRRRR! I just got done closing the windows cause it's cooling down (into the 60's) now that the sun's down here in SO. Cal.

What a beautiful part of this planet you live on!

The wife was looking over my shoulder at the pics and asked "What does he DO up there in the winter?, the only guys that could work in that is that snowplow driver!" AL (& Penny)

Well,

I do have four children!!!!!hehehehe

No, there is lots to do, see the tops of the mountains you can ride snowmobiles right to the tops of those!!!!Apparently some real fantastic scenery up there.

We also have one of the best ski hills on the Eastern Seaboard on the west coast of the island too.

Come up and I'll show you around.

Crusty, the Ford F-150 really didn't appreciate those turns at 70mph, cant wait to take you up there on the bikes.

How much was the rental on the F150? It would be a good backup vehicle in august in case someone breaks down or lobs it.

The total on the rental was about $525.00 Canadian for the week.

I have to figure out what to do with you, like I indicated before we may be able to use one of the Saabs for a chase/support vehicle.

I did receive your phone message a week or so ago but have been too damm busy to reply and I just never have any luck in dialing international numbers.

Grumpy, when did you book the flight and where is it arriving.

On the other side, I think we all should start planning a bit more so I can figure out where to take you guys and how many will be coming.
