I'm interested in getting a GPS tracking device for my bike, one that you can track via the internet. It's not for me, but for my wife, so any time she starts getting antsy she can see where I am (she worries too much when I'm out riding). But so far, every one I've found has a monthly fee tied to it, and they're not cheap... usually $40 a month. Does anyone know of a device that allows home tracking but doesn't involve monthly payments? ~SM |

For those of us who don't have the newest iPhone, there's an free app available for the iPhone called Free GPS from the iTunes store It works by locating your position via GPS and uploading the data to a free web service that displays your location to anyone who logs inth the Instamapper web page with the username/PW you supply them with. My wife used it to keep track of my on my recent trip up AZ 191. Of course, it only works where 3G or other Internet connections are available, No cell phone service, no data uploads to the web service. This can be something of a problem, sometimes. The Instamapper web page shows a standard map display with your various location uploads as dots connected by a line. this might be as close as I'm going to get to having my wife along with me on these trips, I'm afraid... Here's a couple of pix, one from iTunes describing the app, and one from my iPhone screen showing the app in action. There's not much to see - it really does everything behind the scenes, so to speak. Sorry for the miserable text in the second picture, but reducing the resolution takes its toll on text in pictures.

Um, yeah, but all I have is a RAZR on AT&T. I'm not even eligible for an upgrade yet. ~~SM |

I use Sprint's Family Locator for all 4 of our phones. Works great and you can track up to 4 for $10 a month total. |

Is this for antitheft purposes? I've seen some GPS locators that you buy "credits" for tracks, so say she only does 20 or so tracks, you might get away with a cheaper monthly fee or only pay for credits. |
