I know there's a lot of PC knowledge around here, so... My PC is playing up, was re-booting itself every 5 to 20 seconds this morning, plus the onboard video has been flickering for a little while (not the monitor, I tried another already). It now won't boot up at all so I'm guessing it's a power supply, and possibly motherboard as well. If I replace the motherboard with a similar but not exactly the same board, will it be able to boot up and run off my existing C: drive? I'd like to try and avoid having to reload WinXP and all my applications if possible. (System is Windows XP Home and it's a Pentium 4 of some sort). Thanks in advance, chili |

Yes and no. If it is an identical board, you will be able to do it no problems. If there is anything different on the replacement board, windows will know it, and in a best case scenario will install the driver, in worst case scenario would require a reinstall. What is the exact make and model number of it? |

Hey Froggy, thanks, I hope you're healing well If I've got the right number it's an "Intel Desktop Board D845GRG". Could be CRG, but I'm pretty sure it says GRG. |

I meant the computer itself, unless its a homebuilt machine. I will do some research with what you gave me |

It's a no-name job built up by one man kinda company, who's phone number I can't find, of course. I'm trying to find a local place that can test the power supply today for me. |

Ok good. Power supplies are cheap enough that even if you replaced it for the hell of it, it wont be a big deal. Also note, if the power supply failed, its possible it damaged other components. I had one fry a motherboard and CD drive but everything else was good. That was my nice chromed one with blue window and wire loomed cables and heatshrink and UV reactive detachable connectors Really old ass pic

Hope your healing up well Froggy. Is it bad that I noticed the giant heat-sink behind your monitor before noticing the pic on the monitor ? Had one of those cases too .. still do somewhere. Oh and what Froggy said. (Message edited by riding_tall on July 14, 2009) |

"Is it bad that I noticed the giant heat-sink behind your monitor before noticing the pic on the monitor ?" Yes. Lol Just dropped PC off to local shop, who seem pretty switched on. They're going to check out whether it's power supply or motherboard or both, and they're going to do it today . The motherboard's are available here, pretty cheap, but not in stock. If it's the motherboard I may upgrade, which I'd been thinking about anyway. The guy at the shop says they can run a "Windows repair" (or something like that) which will sort out my drive with the new motherboard. They've also said they will get any data I need straight away (Vamp's college files!) from the drives on to my memory stick if needed |

Hah, yea thats the water tower/heatsink thing. My computer is water cooled but my bikes aren't. I don't use that case anymore, it only held 8 hard drives, and my new one will hold 12. Again, another old pic, I need to clean my desk and take an updated one.

Just got report - Motherboard is ok, but not guaranteed to last forever, power supply is definitely sick and being replaced today. So I can get it home and get everything backed up and start thinking about an upgrade |

Froggy, dude, WTF do you need 12 HDDs for? Are you trying to single-handedly back up the entire nation's porn supply, or what? ~SM |
