Our family dog died yesterday. We'd had her a long time, since '90 (she was 14) so she lived a good long life. I was with her when she died, she went peacefully in her sleep at home. Just thinkin about it 'cause every night after I get off the Badweb and shut down the computer, I go out and feed her and say Goodnight. I was just thinking about doing that just now and then it hit me....

Losing a Dog is one of the hardest things you'll ever go thru. It has been 5 years since I have had to go thru it and it still almost brings tears to my eyes thinking about it.
I am blessed with 2 dogs right now, both Labs.

Keep thinking about the good times Captain.

Hey Captain I'm with you 100%. My old Chow Chow bitch has been with me since '89 and she's got to the point where she needs help getting up. Vet wants me to put her down, but I haven't worked up the courage yet. It's going to hurt real bad.

When my wife left I was upset, when my dog died I cried. You're going to miss her for a long time. We're feeling for ya.

Most sincere condolences Kirk. I have a 14 going on 15 year old Border Collie who is enjoying his twilight years. Thought I was going to lose him last year but he bounced back from what appeared to be a stroke. I'm trying to prepare myself, but when it comes, the loss of such an untterly selfless and devoted companion is going to wreck my world for a time. I love my bike, but I'd give it up in a heartbeat to have another fifteen good years with my best buddy. Damn, you got me tearing up.

This brings up another topic. Ever hear the self professed experts who proffer their learned conclusions that dogs have no sense of emotion or of self, that all their behavior is mandated by instinct or their self preservation? More complete and utter morons do not exist.

Captain I myself is facing the loss of a dog real soon a 12 yr old yellow Lab named Schultz. He's still in good spirits but going down hill seems fast. He's probably the best Frisbee dog I have ever seen. He's been with me a long time and don't want to face whats coming.I also have Goliath which will be there to raise my spirits when the time comes.Time heals.

Whoever says dogs don't have emotions either has never been an owner of one (or spent any amount time around one for that matter) or falls under Blake's interpretation. Our lab is nothing short of a four-legged person with a speech impediment.

All I can add is.....

MY FERRETS WERE THE SAME!

I am getting to the point, now, that I can handle retrieving a new pair. Not that both loki and babs can ever be replaced.

btw: I still have fond memories of my collie/shepherd mix. From a newborn pup to 15 yrs.

Cap'n:

It is one of life's ironies that such pivotal family members and friends are fated to have only 1/7 the time that we do. Perhaps that explains the intensity of the loyalty, affection and love they give us while asking so little in return.

Our slobbery, fur strewing, frisbee fetching and occasionally flatulent canine (and ferret!) friends leave a hole in our souls when they leave us. Painful as the loss of these family members is, their passing reminds us to appreciate the gifts they have given us over our brief time together.

Golden Family

The photo above was taken 8 years ago. Kaipo, the darker male, was lost to cancer in 1998 and Pearl (standing) passed a few years later. I lost the puppy, Kona, to a sudden cancer a year ago today a week before his 8th birthday. I wandered around the house for two months after he died - devastated every time I found one of his tennis balls or Kongs under a piece of furniture - until I located and adopted Charly, my new best friend/contant companion and moral compass.Chesapeake Charly

I found that although it took a little time Charly was able to fill some of the void left in Kona's passing. I found that my life was not really complete until I could once again tour my yard every day with a shovel and bucket in hand and a slobbery friend at my heal . . . . pun intended.

Hang in there, Cap'n . . . and start looking for a new best buddy.

The big problem I'll face is when my Lab passes what will Goliath do.Goliath has had a buddy since day one to be with when the rest of the family is not.We are soon going to be breeding Goliath to have one of his son's and also will his new partner in crime.

Sophie
Capt. mine turned 10 a couple of weeks ago. Not only is she one of the only things I insisted on in the divorce, she can run an excavator like nobody's bidness : )
I don't know what I'll do when the inevitable happens, just thinking about it is difficult. She's a PITA, gets into the trash no matter how well it's hidden, farts, snores, and hates puppies, which makes it even harder - I'd get her a companion, but the only one she ever tolerated stayed with the ex-wife. I dumped a potential girlfriend when she told me she didn't like dogs.
Time Heals, but it doesn't make us forget. To the shelter, my friend. Lot's of lonely canines looking for loving homes. If I could have a pack, I would.
Peace
David

I hear ya Captain. I went through putting one of ours to sleep back in December 2000, and then had to come home for the first time at Thanksgiving during my first semester of law school the news that another one had been hit by a car and killed. Those two were the first that I had been through from essentially birth through death. It's tough. Fortunately I'm blessed to have to lovable Australian sheperds that I get to see agian this weekend.

Dogs are people too.

David just said the most meaningful thing off all the posts here. Do not buy a dog from a breeder. PLEASE go to your local shelter or rescue organization and save a dog who otherwise will be euthanized!! There are so many dogs killed every day due to out "purebred" stupidity!! The best dogs I have ever owned have all been rescued.

WOW! Thanks to all of you for your compassionate response! Fortunately for me, we got another pup last July who is a handful about now, but just as loving as Lady was. A little more rambunctious, yeah- but she's still a pup. We also have a rather stuck up, haughty cat who I love dearly- it does sort of distract me from the present. To those of you whose dogs (or ferrets!)are getting on in years, it's never too early to get a 'backup'. Incidentally, Lady came from Orphans of the Storm 14 years ago. Again, thanks, guys. I didn't expect that kind of response. I was just babbling....

We Buellers are different in every sense. I don't think I could find posts such as these anywhere else.

I don't know what I'd do without my Gozer (A pound puppy and my first dog on my own.) He's a Chow / Great Dane mix "if you can picture that!" He's such an integral part of mine and my wifes lives. You know I'd own and love other dogs for sure, but you never truly replace any one of them. They each have their own personalities, and I'm sorry, personality isn't an instinctive behavior...

Love your puppy and keep a special place in your heart for "her" Capt.

Peace be with you,
Charles

If you do a search on Rainbow Bridge, it is a great poem about what happens to our pets after they pass. I saw this a few years ago on one of the gun boards where I post.

A few years ago I got married. It was late in life for me but I got a full family in the deal. Wife, 12 year old step daughter, and of course, Shana (means pretty face) who was Lori's Shep from The North Shore Animal League. Shana of course sleeps with us. Her take on that is she allows us to sleep in her queen size bed. While she is now 10 years old, I have a very hard time thinking of the time we will not have her. This past year I have noticed she is going gray and sleeps more. In the morning, who gets kissed first? We all know that answer!

I feel for anyone that looses their best 4 paw-ed friend because I know I will be a basket case when Shana leaves.

Captain,
my condolences. Dogs are family, it's that simple. I've got two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and a 7 year old Beagle. If anything ever happened to any of them I know that I'd be a wreck and my wife would be out of commission for at least a week.

I've always had at least one dog, and I can remember every one of them and the friendship and love that they shared.

Eight years ago our Rottweiler, Duke, was starting to go downhill. His bad hips were getting worse. We got a pup, a male from a street dog in L.A. who hopped in a Peterbilt and joined the driver as he headed back to Seattle.

Anyway, her pup rejuvinated our old Rottie, who had 5 more years of good living before we had to put him down at age 11.

I can understand. The reason I remember the date I got my bike is that when I got home with it, I was informed that one of our dogs passed. It really put a damper on the day.

Kirk,
The love between a man and his dog is one of the most precious on earth. I have lost two of my Danes, Tazz and Candi, in the past six months. I know how much you hurt. In time tears of sorrow will turn to tears of joy when you think of her. I will rember you, your family and your very special girl when I pray tonight.

It's not just people who get sad over the death of a dog. Dogs do too. My sister had two black labs Buster and Sweetheart. They had been together for about ten years when Buster died. After that, Sweetheart wouldn't stay in the backyard by herself, wouldn't sleep in the garage like they had for years, had no interest in tennis balls, etc. It was pretty obvious that Sweetheart was sad and depressed over Buster's death. But, like people do, Sweetheart got better over time.
