Just spent some time at the local Buell/HD dealership and they had their XB12XP Police bike on the floor. That got me to wondering:

What were sales like for the Buell Police bike. I don't know of any sales that were made in Florida. All the local agencies here are wedded to Road Kings.

Does any one know of any agencies buying the XB12XP?

Good question...I've wondered that, myself.

IIRC Ulywife said their local department was looking at them, but I don't think they ever bought one.

Teddyagreek,

Who around here bought BMW's? I thought Pinelles county just bought a bunch of RKs.

It's a tough market to crack . . . there are some "give away" deals (like departments who lease the Road King for $1/yr) that serve as impediments for entry.

I'd be surprised to see much market penetration in the first couple years.

I'd also be surprised if they proceeded with the program without some "you build it, we'll buy it" commitments in hand.

I'd be patiently looking for that "special application" where the Ulysses works. I can see if being a nice compliment to, as an example, the NYPD HD fleet, for certain applications.

Once that foot in the door occurs who knows . . .

Parks Police, Forest Service, local rural Police/DNR departments sound like logical users

Back in the mid 80's and early 90's I was a civilian employee for a medium sized police department in South Florida. The motormen there were on Road Kings. As a cost saving measure, the chief at the time, Warren Gilbert bought Kawasakis instead of Road Kings. The motormen were one step shy of open rebellion. The Kawasakis lasted less than a year before they were replaced by Road Kings.

Outlaws and Hell's Angels aren't the only ones with a special connection to their bikes. Moving a department to another mount is tough sell at best.

Mid 80's and early 90's, and they were on Road Kings? The Road King wasn't around 'til 1994.

He meant FLH . . . the classic "cop bike". Many bid departments are using the Kawasaki and BMW.

Dragonslay,

You're right they were not Road Kings. They were the big touring frames but not Road Kings.

Ah yes, the good ol' FLHT bikes.
Not to change the subject, but the Evolution engine ('84 - '99) is the best engine that H-D ever made IMO.

I see the first wave of XP's being for more of a special application use too. Rough area access and maybe beach patrol. They'd be great for public relations too.

There are several cities here in Pinellas county that have an annual event called "Touch a Truck". The city/county brings all kinds of vehicles out. There is everything from garbage trucks and electric pole bucket trucks to the armored car and helicopter the county sheriff uses. A tricked out motorcycle would look great in the mix.

Does the age demographic of the average motorman has anything to do with it? Would it mirror the demographic of the average Harley rider? Older guy in his 40's? That sounds like a Harley rider. As new and younger guys go to the traffic unit would they prefer a sports based bike? Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

All of the cop bikes I have seen in my area are Harleys and are leased with some sort of service contract with the local dealership.
They later sell the cop bikes for almost $MSRP

If they were juuust a little bit more cheap, I would have snagged one up.
I like the hockey puck bag closures and solo seat with air ride.
I don't regret having the XB12x at this time though : )

Not to change the subject, but the late model Shovel Head (1340) engine is the best engine that H-D ever made IMO.
Followed up by the 5 speed Sportster engine.
XB engine would have been the BEST by far if the cheap bastages hadn't removed the trap door.

While management can be quick to implement/force change on their officers, it doesn't always go both ways!!

Yeah, that's what a sales guy told me last time I went to Carolina Buell/H-D. I'd like to see a cop on a XB12XP.

I told him I'm interested in a Ulysses XT. There was one right in front of him, and he said "We'll let you know when we get a XT in". I was trying not to laugh at him.

I see them on 321 and i also saw one with a car pulled on I-85 in Gastonia.

There were a couple salesman at Carolina that used to be into Buells, one named Cowboy i remember that moved on a few years ago. I haven't been there in awhile though.
