Was checking out a schubert..I think thats how its spelled..helmet yesterday.

had the flip up front as well as a real neat pop down dark visor. It extended about 2.5" or so down. Very cool setup overall, & price was in the $320 range.

Schuberth Concept Helmet,
Very nice and it has great wind protection. I tried it at Torque Center as well. The face guard moves up and it's got a pretty cool little mechanism that hopefully will not release when struck.

That sun shield is extremely trick. I read a review on it a few days ago and the reviewer said that he got addicted to it and was adjusting it all the time.

I got one for Christmas last year(02), and I really like mine. It fits me better than a Shoei Synchrotech or HJC Symax; and it's miles ahead of my old Nolan N100. If it fits you comfortably, then I recommend it wholeheartedly.

What's the noise level like Crusty? cos I like a bit of peace from the wind noise, I had to replace my old AGV last year and the replacement Shark fits really well but is much noisier.

All of the Modular (flip up) helmets are noisier than a quality full face helmet like Arai, Shoei, etc. It's the price I accept for the convenience of not having to remove/replace my eyeglasses every time I put on or remove my helmet. It's not so loud that it really bothers me, but I have a partial loss of hearing from having been a Miner for 20 years. Only you can decide if it's too loud for you. I do advise the use of earplugs, to be on the safe side. Losing your hearing kinda sucks.

I have the concept, and it is a really good helmet, but not the be all end all. The flip down tinted panel is nice, and I do use it from time to time, but could be done better... it curves the wrong way.

Also, when you have the top flipped up, you look like marvin the martian. But it is well designed and well made. Its warm and ventillated well. Its a nice helmet, and $320 is not bad. I don't think I would drop $400+ on one though.

Reep, et al...Please elaborate on the tinted flip down panel curving the wrong way.

Also would appreciate info on the effectiveness of the venting system as well as the snap out liner.

Am looking to pick up two of them and with that kind of cash outlay, I am interested in all the real world input I can get.

Thanks

Dang, if it weren't for the Sig O's infatuation with gadgets and claustrophobia I would stick her in a regular full face and save heap big wampum. LOL

I tell you Bill, right now I am looking for a new helmet & that one is right at the top of my list. I like the ease of use & am also addicted to gadgets.

The one I was looking at was a real pale blue. Didnt care for that color but I am sure they have all the colors of the rainbow.

BTW I was also looking at another helmet but unfortunately I didnt bother looking at the name. It had the odd anti turbulance deals on the top of it. Supposed to reduce the buffeting caused by wind drag, but damn did this helmet ever weigh a ton. Seriously it was the heavist helmet I have ever tried on.

Correct me if I am wrong but from what I understand, most tracks will not let you race with anything but a full face helmet. Primarily as they require a Snell endorsement and Snell only applies to one piece full face helmets.

Another difference may be in the definition of "Track Day" vs "Track School" or whatever term they use for a non-race educational experience. I have seen pics of on-track riding schools in various publications with open face helmets. Heck, even DOT shorty helmets where the Harley crowd is participating.

Admittedly, flip up helmets do not provide the protection of a full face helmet in the event of a face plant. Way back when, MCN (perhaps under their old name of Road Rider) did a comparo and defined the pins the chin bar pivots on as the weak link. It seems the pins were made of some plastic derivative and simply did not have the shear strength to keep the chin bar intact.

I do not know if the pivot pin issue has been corrected over the years as I have read nothing addressing this. I would think that any manufacturer that improved their helmet concerning this issue would be touting it and the press would have picked up on it.

Regardless, considering my Sig O's concerns, it is a flip up or nothing and I refuse to go sport riding/touring with her this year without a helmet. Cruising on the Harley is one thing, but running the twisties or riding long distance is out of the question.

I've had both a Shoei Duotec and Syncrotec and am now on my second Schuberth Concept...The first crashed well, thank you...I don't understand the problem mentioned above re the curve of the sun shield and love the helmet except...And there's always an "except"...The tension to hold the main shield either open (forward) or closed relies upon the thickness of the shield where it is attached at the pivots on the sides...This wears and in about 20,000 (s)miles it will either not stay open with the windshield down in the warmer weather and with the windshield up in the winter the back pressure behind the windshield forces open the helmet shield...The solution is to replace the shield and that's a $60 msrp solution...That's my only nit to pik...When you buy the helmet try and get, in writing, an agreement to purchase replacement shields at a discount...MCN did a review of the flip up's a while back and the top rated one was the Nolan...Primarily due to weight...The Concept, being Teutonic, uses steel in the construction of the release mechanism, making it heavier...In rapidly changing light conditions such as tunnels and very shaded roads the flip down sun shield has to be the safest feature...Traveling west into a setting sun I use both sunglasses and the helmet shield and that combo is the only thing I've ever found that really works...Of course, you still may get rear ended by the blind idiot behind you...

See Ya!

I really like the Schuberth Helmet. I tried one on not long ago. I had ridden to the dealer which is about 30 miles from here. I wore my Arai RR7-RX3. I put the Schuberth on and played for a few minutes. The only thing I noticed was the weight. I am looking for a lighter helmet. The Schuberth was noticeably heavier and this after only a few minutes.

I understand that it's design may not lend itself well to lightness. I think I would like a road test before laying out $$$.

It is a very nice helmet however.

Bob & Clyde...Thank you for your comments. Sounds like a good investment to me.

"Old What's Her Name" isn't going to notice the difference in weight because she has nothing to compare it to. Plus, I have the feeling that when she does learn there are lighter helmets on the market, the features of the Shuberth will more than make up for the difference.

Typical "Material Girl," eh?

If I could get more then 6 months out of a helmet I could see spending the money, and I may buy one for long rides but I am just to damn hard on helmets. Not wreck wise just seem to tear up the padding and crack the vents unintentionally. (watching a helmet jump off a mirror stalk from 5 feet away is an example, I still haven't figured that on out since the stalk went through the visor opening and the bars hadn't moved...)

Having had a Nolan N-100 and now having a Schuberth Concept, I'll say that there's no comparison. MCN may say that the Nolan is a better hat, but my experience shows the opposite. The Schuberth is a whole class above the Nolan. It is better finished, has more features and works better. It also fits me much better, but that varies with the individual. The Shu's vents pass more air, when open. The liner is removable for cleaning, as well. I don't understand the "Wrong curve" comment about the sun screen; mine works O.K. Not great, but not bad. My faceshield still works fine; it hasn't worn to the point that it won't stay open. Replacement cost is on a par with the price of an Arai shield. The last one that I bought for my Quantum E cost me $52.00, and that was a few years ago.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with my Schuberth.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

The flip down tinted portion of the visor only flips down about half way. So at the "all the way down" position, you have a REALLY distracting line right about on the horizon (on a cyclone, a more forward seating position might be better).

That would be bad enough, but the "line" is not straight like the horizon would be, but rather curved up on the edges. I don't remember if the actual tinted visor is curved, or if this is just the net effect of the setup. Anyway, if the sun is to your right or left, you can't get the tinted thing down far enough to block the sun on the sides without putting the "bright dark transition" right dead center of the stuff in front of you. The net effect is very distracting to me.

Also, the two layers of lexan (?) cause interference patterns when you look through both at the same time. Nothing terrible, but some "wavy" artifacts. I find it pretty distracting.

So, the way I use the tinted sub visor, that works pretty well, is to just lower it as far as necessary to try and keep the sun out of my eyes, but not so far that I actually look through it for anything important.

So I do like it, and I would probably consider another, but I think there is room for improvement. Also, I bought mine on a trip to Germany and picked it up for about $300 (back when the dollar was stronger), and I am very pleased with it at that price. At that same time though, the US supplier of it was BMW, and I think they were charging like $500+ for it. No way it's worth that much.

And just for calibration, I am really fussy about this stuff. I don't even like wearing sun glasses on a ride, the resulting blind spots (most) give me gives me the heebie jeebies, and they distract me as well.

I solved the problem with lasik and ditched the glasses, so my next helmet will probably be full face, though I will look for one with a flip down sun visor again.

Dyna, I only pop out the snap in liner for cleaning. I think it is a part of the helmet suspension system, not an insulating thing. Vents are good, its a little hotter then my Nolan flip face, but that thing was like a screen door anyway. The schuberth is also bone dry in the rain, my head was the only dry part of my body.

When I get home, I will pop out the helmet and see if I can better explain my issues... But again, it is a good helmet, and has been durable for a couple seasons now.

I just bought a Shark RSV from Craig at Waterloo HD/Buell Cycle Centeron Saturday. I havn't got to use it on the bike yet but it is a VERY nice helmet. Has tons of features! Very comfortable, and they gave me a good deal! If you havn't checked into the Shark line of helmets yet I would check them out, they know what they are doing. If you have a BIG budget go for the RSR model!!

Here is a good link to what the RSV looks like. I got the third one down the Bayle SBB.

Reep...Thanks for the update on the sun shield issue. Makes sense and your objectivity, regardless of topic, is something I really enjoy.

Bomber...We have had this discussion before and your conviction concerning the Shuberth is what got me interested in a flip up all over again. Now, it is simply a matter of which one.

Thanks again for all the input received concerning this subject.

Schuberth is a great helmet . . .. . it replaced a NOLAN (several years ago, so my remarks on Nolan MAY be dated) . . . ..

The Nolan was much noisier, fit and finish not nearly up to schuberth's level, and the flip-front lock didn't engage nearly as cleanly, resulting in one or two anxious moments whjen I wcouldn't get it open easily (damn neart impossible to remove without either opening the front or jaws-of-life) . . . the Nolan doens't vent nearly as well and the schuberth . . .

the removable lining in the schuberth makes it easily cleaned, and it

the built-in shades are icing on the cake . . . .I've worn it to numerous track days, although I'm sure that I'd bebounced from a race if I tried to wear it (it ain't Snell, either, or it wasn't 3 years ago)

Just for clarity, I also went from the Nolan to the Schuberth, and agree with everything Bomber says.

I just think there is some room for improvement. I think that I went into it expecting to get a $500 helmet for $300, and came out of it getting a $300 helmet for $300. I would definitely buy another at that price if I decided on another flip face.
