This happens to me every year at this time. I was down at my friend's shop yesterday, and everybody was talking about Daytona. Then the urge hit. In 1996, I called work, and told them I wouldn't be in for a couple of weeks, left the shop, went home, packed and was on the road in 2 hours. Each year, I decide that I'm not going. Sometimes I don't. Last year I didn't.
If I go, I'll have to cut my expenses to the bone. The KOA in Deland is pretty cheap. I'd have to ride pretty hard to get to the warm weather, but the motels in North Carolina are dirt cheap. (Rocky Mount?)
If I leave Tuesday, I could be there Wednesday afternoon. I could see the Hot Shoe races Wednesday night, do demo rides on Thursday, See the National short track on Thursday night, do the IMS show on Friday, Main Street Friday night, And the 200 on Saturday. Get a good night's sleep then leave for home Sunday morning. On paper, I can do it for $500. In reality, it'll wind up around $700.
I'd be flying solo. My wife can't get the time off from work. I'd really like to bring her with me; she's never been there. I discussed it with her last night, and she's supportive.
Hell, I don't know. If I don't go, then I could buy the pretty Baker chain drive kit with the roller tensioner for the M2.
The good news is that I've got a week to oscillate between my practical side and my inner child (Juvenile Delinquent) before I make the final decision. But I think I'll change the oil in the bike, just in case.

Where is Paramores Campground? Maybe they've got tent spaces for reasonable prices.

Blackbelt,
I think Blake meant a report on the AMA races, not Hooters!

You and Spidey can still do a Hooters report with pictures for the rest of us!

Crusty,
I met you this summer, and thought you were cool as hell. You made drain plugs for a ton of us, and I wish that 99% of us could show the heart that you show towards the 'hobby' that we have, and the Buell community in general. I guarantee whatever you choose to do will be good to go with your wife. You are a lucky man. I guess the biggest woman in my life right now is my mother, since I'm still a youngin, and in regards to my planned trip across the country this summer, CA to Newfie she says

"CA to MI is a long way to ride all alone. Yes, I am really excited about this trip. I think it is an admirable thing for you to do, but the MOM FACTOR kicks in and I think, "Is he crazy"?" I know it has been a dream of yours to do the Pacific to Atlantic thing and this is for a worthy cause."

If it is something your wife is cool with, go for it. I bet Spidey's antics would be well worth the trip. And buellbackbelt, he never left me alone about the times I ditched a few of the MI guys with riding for other stuff, especially since he's so close to me. Be aware of that, he's already on the case.

Regardless of what you decide to do, my aluminum drain plug is BAD ASS, and the bag you carefully placed them in is in my scrapbook from the trip last summer, never to be forgotten.
Thanks a ton, Crusty.

Oh, and that OCBueller guy, he's awesome. Met him over the summer, he plays with bikes with pedals most of the year, but he has a bad ass S1, and hooked my buddy Brian and I up with a few T-shirts, all through the badweb connection. He's an awesome guy to talk to. I'd definitely hook up with him if I had the chance.

Can't wait to see you this summer in Newfie!!!
Alex

OCBueller, I can't leave that early. The soonest I can leave is Tuesday, the 2nd. I appreciate the offer, though.
I'm one of those nut cases who feels that it's important to ride to and from Daytona. That the ride is almost as important as the event. Even though it's miserably cold, and I ask myself repeatedly if I should seek psychiatric help for wanting to subject myself to this much discomfort; I feel it really enhances the experience. I did go in a car once. The guy I was riding with was physically unable to ride that far, so we took his minivan and hauled the bikes in a trailer. It just wasn't the same.
Of course, If I had been planning to go and had to be back for work and the only practical way to do it was to take a car, I would.
Blake, if you've never been to Daytona, you don't know what you're missing. The 200 is unique. It's an amazing race that's unlike anything else. It's an event that you should experience. TV doesn't do it justice.
If I can find Internet access while I'm down there, I'll post a report.

Well Alex, not that i am pushy, but being the only Buell for 30 miles, then finding out that there is a guy that has an M2, around the Flint area every now and then, well i was stoaked. That is kwel though.. College is a drag and can suck up a ton of time.

Crusty, If you do want to crash at our site, let me know so we can expect ya, and won't ditch ya. Even though i don't think it will be hard to find our site from the rest, with what Spidy is planning.

Blake, You got it man. Joe, one of the guys heading down wiht Tony and me, is bringing his Laptop and digital camera. So if we can find a decent interent connection we will update you periodically, if not you will have to wait.

3 DAYS!!! HAHAHHAHAHA AND IT IS GONNA BE 50 DEGREESE HERE IN MICHIGAN ON SATURDAY!! great time to try out the new bike, eh Spidy.?.?

Blackbelt,I'm about 95% sure that I'm going. I have to see a Dr. on Monday about a possible surgery, but I don't anticipate anything that will prevent my leaving Tuesday morning. I downloaded directions from Mapquest to Parramore's, and I expect to arrive Wednesday afternoon/evening. I appreciate the Invite, I have my own tent, And I promise not to touch anyone's beer (I don't drink). I'd resigned myself to the fact I wasn't going until last Monday, when the old Demon resurfaced(I used to be a bike tramp).
I won't be 100% sure until Monday evening. If you want, I'll post here and confirm, or I can send an E-mail to Tony if you prefer.

Looking forward to Tues. night at Hooters/Hess.
FYI, Bike Week weather looks like no chance of rain all week and highs in the upper 70's and lows in the upper 50's. Perfect!
