Last week I took delivery of an Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-Ray player.Oppo is direct marketing dealer out of Cali who burst on the scene a few years back with some wonderful up converting dvd players, one model which i purchased after reading of the quality of the product and the excellence of their customer service on various forums. I enjoyed the product and never had a need of their customer service (a good thing always). I was enthused to learn some months back that they had a Blu-ray player in the works and even better they had released 350 or so of the players in "Beta Tester program" which would let real consumers and techno geeks bring problems to light which Oppo then addressed through many revisions and firmware updates promising not to release the final product until they had more than a 70% approval rating upon the testers. They exceeded that number by 22 percentage points and the product was released though by invitation only as they still have a steady waiting list which exceeds 30,000 the last time I checked. Well guess what, I got a lemon! While a little disappointed, I was philosophical about it, thinking on how many non problem products I have purchased over the years and figuring I was probably overdue for a dud.

I emailed them Saturday with a detailed email of my problems including firmware version, settings, TV model and symptoms. I was not expecting any reply before today as their customer service hours are clearly posted as Monday thru Friday 9:00 to 5:30 PST. Here is how it went..

Subject: BDP-83 PLAYBACK PROBLEMS

Hello, I just recently installed my BDP-83 and played a std dvd (rental) of Madagascar 2 for my children. About 10 minutes into movie there began slowdown and pickup of video playback speeds followed by heavy blocking artifacts on screen, then snow and then nothing. I removed the dvd and inspected, while clean it did have some blemishes so I tried several std dvd's from my own collection which are in pristine condition. These included " The Incredibles", "Bolt" " and "Iron Man". Same results for all discs. I then Inserted Blu-Ray version of "How the west was won" ( store bought) and though not as dramatic, it did freeze at the 20 minute mark and go black. I Then Checked my settings and found nothing out of the usual from what the set up wizard and manual suggested. I then swapped different HDMI cables , Which included one supplied with unit, 2 cables purchased from Monoprice.com and 2 supplied with my verizon fios STB's. It is when I started this procedure that I noticed that the HDMI cables all felt quite a bit on loose side in the BDP-83's port, not dramatically but noticeably less seated than the rest of my components with this connection type. the above described problems were reproduced with all cables I tried and I noticed that playback would be affected though not always freeze by simply toucjing the HDMI connection at the player. I am hopeful you can resolve these issues as I am desperate to enjoy what I expect to be a stellar product, Thank you, Randy thomson

My Product info is as follows:

Serial: xxxxxxxxxxxxx7479

Disconnect the BDP-83 from the power source for no less than an hour. Press the POWER button on the front panel for 5 seconds. Release.

Reconnect the BDP-83 directly to your walled power outlet, bypassing any power switch or conditioner.

Download and install the 27-0601 firmware (https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-83/bdp-83- firmware-27-0601.aspx).

Try playback again. If you find the player still has issues, then the decoder is likely defective and the unit will need to be repaired or replaced.

I followed all of the procedures but while having no more outright freezes, the other issues still persist.

Which was answered by:

Randy,

We will arrange for a replacement player to be sent out to you on Monday.

To say I am floored by this level of customer service would be a gross understatement. I did not post this as an advertisement for the manufacturer but as a testament to the power of great customer service! This company will always be at the top of my list for future purchases in this category and it is always heartening to know that customer service is still alive and well somewhere out there. Just thought I would share.
(P.S. this is not meant to point fingers at any other company's customer service or ignite a flamefest. It is simply a stand alone story.)

This is a motorcycle bulletin board. I don't like discussions about televisions here. How would you like it if I went on a television board and started talking about motorcycles? Hopefully the Soylent Green guy will try to drown you out.

I would post about Buell customer service, but I have not needed them for anything. Damn reliable products!

I have an OPPO as well, the DVD player not blu-ray. It upconverts to 1080p beautifully. I'm pleased that their customer service is so good. Fortunately, I have not had to call them.

I have bought 3 OPPO players, as a company they have always been a joy to deal with.

I though about getting in on the BR beta, but I figure I would wait until production version is released.

A new BR player along with a new Outlaw processor

Apparently, some took offense at my posting, not realizing that it was a parody of what is currently happening on other BW threads that are trying to suppress political discussions.

I have no problem of discussions about television, politics, Buells, troglodytes, or whatever on BW.

Good to hear that there is still good service out there.
I would also like to add that their quick response was probably slightly motivated by your initial contact.
Most folks run in the door screaming and yelling. You were very professional and informative in your letter.

Oh... and we need this in here... just for funzies:
