So I'm looking at this HSR and realize a couple of things.

First, the adapter to get the carb to accept filters / intakes for the Keihin CV carb BLOWS CHUNKS. It seems like it partially obstructs some kind of small orifices (air correction?) right at the mouth of the carb. It certainly doesn't LOOK like it flows too cleanly.

Second, there's a HOLE (maybe 3/4"?) in the top of the bore on the atmosphere / air cleaner side of the slide. Uh, Houston... Is there supposed to be a plug in there or something?

Did I make a mistake and stumble upon the some Korean imitation brand like KillMeKnow and it just LOOKS like it says Mikuni on the box? I know that the HSRs are well respected, capable, tunable carbs but I was a bit surprised to find the odd fit with the filter adapter and I'm just not sure what to thing of the gaping hole, either...

oh, you ordered the gaping hole model? bummer.
perhaps there is a breather fitting to go in the hole?

Finally installed one on my 1998 S1-W replacing a very finely tuned CV. I do not know why it took me so long to do this! Response is amazing...just did my frst..make that my second accidental 3rd gear wheelie tonight on the way home from work. Bets carb on the market. Take your time installing it and you will never regret the carb.

Mikuni's rock.

Best bolt on performance mod I made to my bike. Don't know, don't care, if it added more power or not. It changed the way it felt, and in a very good way. Lots more snap, lots LESS cough. My CV wasnt' bad, it didn't cough badly, but it just doesn't compare to the mikuni in feel.

When I got the mikuni, I worried if it would be an issue when I went up Palomar or up into the Bernadinos/Sierras, etc. I'd head that CV's were better altitude compensating carbs, and that made sense.

But it's a non-issue. The mik runs great up the mountain, and it's still jetted slightly fat down here at sea level.

I wish my 99 S3 was carbed so I could put one on it!!

Yea, I think I remember there being one open hole at or near the top.

I put my Mikuni on 4 years ago and have never regretted it. Twisting the throttle is like twisting the rear wheel itself.

I actually stepped down every jet, main, pilot and accel pump nozzle one size, but left the needle alone (hard to remember it all) and got a bit more snap.

Bike does not ping or detonate, nor does it foul plugs (I run fine wire NGKs and stock coils--runs great).

Actually, the bike still runs rich enough that I really don't need the the accelerator pump. My accel pump does NOT squirt off idle. It starts around 1/8-1/4 throttle and shuts off by half way or so. Saves a bunch of fuel and keeps the plugs cleaner. I leave the bike this amount of rich for engine cooling.

If you want even more throttle response, send all crankcase breathers to a vented catch tank. Third gear is where I felt they made a difference. No change in HP, but you got something in the throttle; as though the pistons were pumping easier or something.

This stuff, that 99 cent Harley venturi, a Q curve ignition, a muffler and an emptied airbox got me 90HP with 80lb/ft @2800rpm.

I like.
