ok guys, i need some experienced Scorp users to chime in here;

i have just a tic over 4500 miles on my stock rear tire. (08 Uly) i need to go to orange county for a child support hearing on monday, and after my last little weekend ride my tire inspection indicates i am right at the wear bar with a slightly squared off profile.

what mileage have people been getting???

i need to put on about 1200 miles round trip to get to OC then home, mostly slab.

i thought of riding down there and having it changed monday night or tuesday morning before heading home, but i hate paying a dealer to change a tire! maybe someone has the tools etc we could do the rear wheel pull and run it somewhere to get a tire put on it???

all suggestions welcome, if i can't come up with a good plan of attack, i'll just have to take the cage, it is not really a recreational trip anyhow, i was just hoping to at least have an enjoyable ride and save some fuel!!

You might save fuel riding your bike, but you do not save dollars. At $200/tire every 4500 miles - that really means that if you drive another vehicle that gets 20 MPG, your price is the same as riding a Buell at 40 MPG.

My best front on a sync was 18k, best rear was 13k. I got sick of changing tires every other month, so now I am on the Strada's, they seem to be holding up better.

Actually I got to dig up the old posts, I think it was closer to 15k (Both tires went on at the same time, rear was replaced about 3k later due to bike getting rearended damaging tire), no cords. She was square, on the highway it would take 5 lanes to make a slight turn!

Rear

Front with 18k

As Crusty said, its hard to wear out a tire that dosen't hit the ground!

wow, my rear looks worse than that with only 4500 miles! i guess two up riding on the freeway uses 'em up. and yes i always check the pressures before a ride.

i guess i'll just take the cavalier that gets 25.4 mpg!!

Lots of shorter/slower mph (city) trips will make a tire last a long time as the tire does not get as hot. Extended slab will eat a tire really fast. Thats one reason some get a lot of miles and another will not. Some live in the northern states (cooler) and will get longer wear. If you live in Florida and ride the slab vs Minnesota as a commuter the tire wear will vary vastly.

My rear looked worse than that as well, at around 5K. And I live in WI, commute 18 miles a day. So RPM, I think your theory is flawed : )

This is why I switched to Bridgestone BT021s. I want a bit more life out of my tires.

Steve, let us know how the Bridgestone BT021 holds up. In your case it may be the rider...

OMG-WTF????

Frogs, please restate the mileage of those tires when you replaced them- and how in the HEYULL did you burn only one side of the from so bad? IMHO the rear looks fine, but highly improbable for said miles.

Sleez- got pics?

I got almost exactly 10k out of my scorpion rear. Just replaced the front after 12k, and the front didn't really need it yet.

Most of those miles were in omaha commuting 55mph to work, and some spirited runs in iowa's loess hills scenic byway.

I'm looking forward to seeing how long the stradas last that I'm running now. 2400 on the front, about 4400 on the rear and they've got plenty of life left. A lot of those miles are 80+ on interstate.. Personally I don't really see a difference in rate of wear between slab and slower riding.

i have a bridgestone 016 and its by far the best tire i have owned for the compromise of traction and wear. good tire. i even took it to a track day and was really surprised by the way it held up.

I was riding with Dave Gess the other day and as we approached Hal's on Moorland Road we came up to a light.

There was another 2003 XB, looked to be exactly like Dave's, sitting at the light and Dave pulled along side him.

I looked at the tires and all I can say is I hope the fellow was headed to Hal's for a tire.

Yikes!

I got service records at home I will dig up. Off the top of my head, tires changed from factory dunflops to those syncs at 5k, bike rear ended about 8k resulting in new tire, I bought the bike at 15k, Id say about half tread left, replaced both tires at 23k (thats the pictures above). My next pair only lasted till about 32.5k (again swapped before cord was showing). Currently running Diablo Stradas, about 39k on the bike right now.

Here was my bike when I bought it:

Here was my 32.5k switch:

I am not as bad as some people *Cough*Tramp*Cough* who let it get so thin, you can see through the cords and the tire will stand up unmounted.

Froggy gets 75mpg and 15K out of a tire...
He must spend more time coasting than riding.

I know for a fact froggy can ride the snot out of that uly/long when he wants too. I followed him and Slowride in Suches... I kept up for several miles but eventually they left me.

Lee,

I'd say you're good to go for the trip on that tire. At least I wouldn't let it stop me...But then again, I ride on 'em until the belt shows, then I change. =)

I just changed my rear Scorpion today at 4400, it was on the wear bars & flat in the middle.
I would have happily kept on riding it but the coppers here are very hot on that sort of thing.
It's a stiff fine & 4 points if they nick you.
Also if you have an accident here with a duff tyre on, the insurance company can walk away from it all by saying you were driving a vehicle in an illegal (& therefore uninsured) condition.

Mr grumpy;

good point!

well i checked my local moto dealers and the only shop that had one in stock was the KTM/Yamaha dealer, just over 200.00 mounted!

thanks for all the input, i think i'll just take the car, and ride the tire locally for a bit more before changing it.

I'd be overjoyed to get 4K out of a rear. I need a rear right now and it has under 3K on it and it's toasted up badly on both sides.
