A couple weeks ago my friendly HD Retailer called me to advise the new primary chain adjuster was in. The metal gasket however was not here. Yesterday I took the primary off to replace the adjuster and never had the gasket. No big deal as we still got 4-5feet of snow on the ground and it won't be going anywhere for a while. I call the retailer to ask about the gasket and they did not order it. The excuse they gave me was that they would have to order 10 of them in order to sell me one. They also don't anticipate selling very many over the next year, so they won't order them. Can Dave, Bubba or Spidey comment on that as I think its Bull Poopy. Next, can someone tell me the cost of a shiney new gasket including shipping? | ||

Sigh. They think they will never remove a new sportster primary cover? Don't darken their doorstep again. Anybody know if the part number is different between the bolts and the sportsters? Bet there is a local mom and pop harley shop that will have the james metal gasket and is willing to work for their money. Even the james paper gasket (silicone bead both sides) is fine, and a step up from the harley paper joke. | ||

I'll try the local independent Harley Repair Shop, seems these days they are getting a good percentage of customers. Normally the local shop is pretty good about these things. When they are the only Harley Retailer on the Island I am sort of stuck. | ||

Newfie, If you don't get a response from anyone else, I'll run out and get you one. I'm 99% sure the Sporty gaskets are the same as the Buell ones, and I think the metal one was right around $15 or so. I can check out the place in town, or I can run down to J&P Cycles, I know they'll have a James or Cometic gasket for probably the same price, with better quality. Drop me a line. Alex | ||

newfie just to act like a bubba go back in that shop on a saturday when its busy with coffe drinkers...oooops I mean hd riders. and just fucking go off the handle with a tapestry of 4 letter words strung together in the beauty of just outright cursing. make a big ass scene and finish it with....you god forsaken dumbasses have your thumbs so far up your asses your gagging yourself on stupidity and drivel. If you want one I've got them....for christ sake they are sportster gaskets......the new an improved ones are more expensive so if you find an old paper one at a after market shop just go with that. FUCK I HATE BEING ASSOCIATED WITH THE HD DEALER NETWORK.....otherwise known as coffee shops | ||

newfie the new gaskets are $20.50. minus the discount. A lil pricey but they are much improved over the paper gaskets. | ||

Newfie, It appears your localest shop has finally graduated from preschool. Show up at the next HOG meeting with your bike on a trailer with the primary case exposed, or if you don't want to do that then just take along the primary cover. Tell the assemblage about the ordeal and ask for input on how the local Enthusiast club members can "help" the localest dealership better serve it's customers. Sort of the same sort of thing Bubba said, but a little less satisfying, but maybe a little more effective, especially if the shop owner is present, double especially if the independant shop owner is also present as a guest visitor and on cue speaks up and proclaims that they either carry the part or can order it with no problem. YMMV, but a dealership that doesn't meet the customer needs by stocking or ordering basic commonly used parts is doomed to failure. | ||

The metal gasket is pricy, but you can put it on with only three hands. The paper gasket requires 5. If you want to go paper, I had much better luck with the James gaskets (silicone on both sides) then the harley gaskets. They come off easier also for the next repair. | ||

The problem is that they have had very few requests for Sporty Primary Gaskets. They have a lot of the paper ones and until they dry up no metal ones will be ordered. You guys have to realize the annual volume of HD bikes sold here on the island would equal one months bikes sold in any of the busier retailers in the US. NO VOLUME I have to give them credit though - every time I have ever asked for parts and provided part numbers via BadWeb the parts always arrive within one week from ordering. Once again its a money driven industry as everything else is. Bubba, Cost of shipping that Gasket to me is roughly $15.00 US + Exchange Rate + Customs/Duty = A hell of a lot more than a paper gasket would cost. I figure by the time its landed here it will cost me $60.00-$70.00 Canadian. I'll just end up getting the paper one, installing it properly and hope for no leaks. A few years ago I bought a Supertrapp, Mikuni Carb and some other go fast bits for my KLR650 from White Brothers in California and by the time it got here I ended up paying almost double for it. Next time I am in the US I am going to buy a bunch of stuff and mail it home to myself to at least avoid the taxes and duty. Thats the bad thing about living in the Best Place in the WORLD!!!! | ||

One suggestion that might help you out with the install of that gasket and the whole primary cover... Get a length of 1/4"-20 Allthread, and make a few pieces that are 4" or so long, and thread them into a few of the holes on the top of the case, and the two places where the little round pins go. Toss the little round things on the allthread, then the gasket, then push the primary on, put the capscrews in and remove the allthread pieces last and install those screws. It helps a whole lot to keep the whole deal lined up, and stops you from messing up the gasket (if you have the paper one) by poking bolts through it ( I did that the first time around). Just a thought, but a whole bunch of folks are heading up your way this summer. Seems like it would be a great way to bring in some spare parts for you. Just run paper until they arrive. | ||

That was going to be my suggestion Mike. If everyone spreads the parts through their stuff they can claim them as spares for themselves so no one gets hit with duties. | ||

I got a line on the paper/silicon James Gasket from the Independent Harley Repair Shop, still pricey but better than the original paper one. $30.00 Candian. | ||

Newfie... having used both the James and the new Harley (metal) gasket, the price is about the same and both probably work equally well. The metal might be a little easier to install, but not that much. Buy it, install it, and have peace. The old paper harley gasket is the only "probably not worth the trouble" part. | ||

Just picked up the James Gasket Kit from the local Harley Indie guys. Excellent service and I got all the o-rings to boot. It appears to be a very well made product. |
