Hi folks.

The story is long... I'll cut it short.

I am buying my buell but before I can get a plate for that and register it I do need to have a valid OH driving license (I am moving from Italy and my license is not enough for that). I took the knowledge test this morning and the skill/driving test is scheduled in a couple of weeks. I need to rent a motorcycle for that day.

Do you guys know any rental agency in the cincinnati area? I could not find nothing googling on the web (aces & 8 is not renting bikes for 2009 and an HD is way too big for the test).

Thanks
Gianluca

you don't need the valid license to register your bike. I had my temps for 3 years before I sucked it up and went and took the test to get my endorsement. Unless something has changed in the past 2 years in Ohio it should be fine. You are just not allowed to ride at night, with a passenger, on the interstate, without a helmet or in "congested" traffic.

That would be great. But at the BMV they keep on saying that I need my valid OH license to get the plate and register the bike ... they didn't looked pretty sure btw. Just consider I still don't have the car license: I should get it next week after the driving test.

Yeah, that is probably the problem. If you had just your regular driving license and your motorcycle temp then you could register it.

I suspect that if you get the drivers license, but not the motorcycle endorsement, you could get the tags for the bike.

But not a test ride...

I'll be happy to meet you at the DMV when your test is scheduled (my schedule permitting) and let you use my XB9SX...

Thanks reepicheep (see my mail).

I do believe you might be right on that. Next saturday I will go again at the BMV.

Many BMV workers are like a lot of people in the world. They only tell you enough to be of no help whatsoever. Get a temporary tag for your bike. Should cost less than $20 and it is good for 30 days. And you can get another one after 30 days if for some reason you do not have all of your registration issues resolved by then.

This sequence would probably work:

1) Get drivers license passing drivers written and driving test.
2) Get bike (but you won't be able to test ride it, as you have no motorcycle endorsement... you could get a motorcycle learners permit, but I doubt they will let you test ride with that).
3) Get temp tags for the bike.
4) Take the riding test and get full motorcycle endorsement.
5) Get final bike plates.

I suspect you could skip step 3 and get the full plates then... but I don't know for sure.

you do NOT need the actual endorsment to to get the final plates. You do need a regular license and that is all. Of course you will need a motorcycle temp permit in order to actualy ride it on the road, and probably will not be able to test ride it. Think about it though, the registration has nothing to do with who is actually riding or driving it. It is just who is financially responsible for it if something happens. I again state that I had my motorcycle learners permit, regular drivers license and had no problem registering and getting permanent plates for my bike in Ohio. Had several friends do the same. Get your drivers license, then take the learners permit portion of your cycle permit. If you want to test ride the new bike then let me or Reep know and you can meet up with one of us to borrow a bike for the actual test. Then get your bike. The other thing is that a lot of counties in Ohio only do the motorcycle testing one Saturday a month. The thing is that you can take your test at any county that borders the one you live in and a lot of them stagger the Saturdays. These tests also fill up pretty quickly though. It might be a couple weeks before you can get into one. Call around the counties that you live in and the ones that border yours and see when the soonest you can get in is.

It should work. I am going to see Wes of Cincinnati EastGate HD tonight and talk about that.

Btw I have my italian motorbike license and it is OK for riding bikes here. It has been confirmed by the officer, as a matter of facts he didnt give me any learner permit as that license is enough.

Ciao
