Pulled my intake today, and was wondering if its normal for there to be carbon build up on the intake manifold side of the heads, since i have done little to no work on this bike, not sure if the carbon build up is suppose to be there or not
is this normal, or should i be concerned, granted carbon build up is normal inside the cylinder head, but not sure if its suppose to be on the intake manifold(carb side)??
any ideas please
thanks
Roger

You can thank the EPA for that. Don't know how many miles you have on your bike, it just one of those things that happens over time.

thats the result of your crankcase breathers being re-routed back into your intake side. The oil vapors cause the buildup.

Not to raise any alarm...it can also be a sign that the intake valve is not seating properly allowing the carbon that is supposed to go out the exhaust valve to come back through the intake valve...if it is bad it will usually be getting dark in the intake manifold as well...

ITs not to bad, seems to be concentrated around the valve itself, i was concerned that this might be the first signs of a bad valve seat, but if its the re routing of the breather lines, that makes sence, and would seem normal
ideas on cleaning it, i was thinking that if i set the motor to TDC, i could, 1 valve at a time, soak them with sea foam or some other cleaner and get rid of the build up, unless there is something better, or better for the engine
ideas??
Before i forget, engine has about 25k miles, runs fine, seems to burn a little bit of oil, but i was assuming thats normal for an air cooled motor, still runs good, and is only down about 2 hp in 15k miles, so no complaints, just want to make sure everything is cool while i have it apart
thanks
Roger

I have had good luck with POWERFOAM by Amsoil...just follow the directions on the can, make sure you are outside, the fumes coming from the exhaust are hefty. Got hooked on it when I had to decoke 2-stroke moped engines every 2 weeks due to the milage and the constant on and off the engines went through.
