Starting from Oklahoma City, I'll be staying in central MO (city of Mexico) overnight then continuing to Milwaukee. Any advice on which route I should take from central MO towards Milwaukee? Mapquest started with I-39N through IA, but after avoiding toll roads it looks like I could follow 151 east from Cedar Rapids, IA and get to Milwaukee just as quickly. Last year I was only riding from Omaha, and was going with other people. This time is nearly twice the distance and I'll be solo, so want to make sure that I have a decent plan in place before heading out. | ||

151 is the way to go if you are looking to avoid toll roads and also stay on the slab. | ||

not to mention most major roads in the area are under some sort of construction, making travel a pain in the ass. | ||

PK- I guess it depends on what your schedule is. I35 can be pretty boring, we found US63 is more enjoyable but a lot of small towns. Highways along the Mississippi are a lot more fun. Once you cross into WI I would suggest 11. It is more scenic and comes out just south of East Troy. | ||

do you have to travel through Mexico? I grew up in Northern Missouri about 50 or 60 miles north of Mexico. Travel North of Mexico on Highway 15 to Highway 24 east to I-39 all the way to Wisconsin I-43 East to East Troy. When I came from Oklahoma City about 12 years ago, I just took I-55 all the way to Joliet to Highway 59 which runs right into Antioch where I live, but If heading to Homecoming take I-39 north of Bloomington North to Wisconsin I-43 East to East Troy. You'll only have the one toll fare at the Rockford area. | ||

I wouldn't absolutely HAVE to go through Mexico, but that's where my family is. I don't get too many chances to go home and see them, plus staying with family is always free! I'm not ballsy enough to try OKC -> Milwaukee in one day. | ||

I'm not ballsy enough to try OKC -> Milwaukee in one day. I wouldn't try do that either. I drove straight through from Oklahoma City to Antioch in a SUV pulling a trailer back in 1997. If I remember correctly it was like 19 hours and it was a very tiring drive. I'll never do that again. Plus it's always nice to visit the family whenever possible, you just never know how long they will be around. |
