My bicyclist friends carry a squirt gun with ammonia in it. |

I have sprayed myself accidentally with mace more than 1 time and when i was younger i had found some mail man/woman issued mace for dogs and got in the car with it and had sprayed it on the head rest and mother of god that stuff is 10 times worse than any pepper spray and was orange and very sticky!!
it burned even from 3 feet away from the stuff not even a direct spray!! |

There we go again some fool's saying they should kick the dog. Very unwise!!!! Not all dogs your gonna get away with that. Take my two dogs for instance. There both extremely fast for there size,weigh 140-150. If either one got your leg your going down and that wouldn't be the end of it either. Now my dogs are not half cocked and wouldn't do such a thing but if you get that type a dog. Best thing is avoid if possible and call the authorities. |

ran right over a dog on the trials bike i had years ago, looked back and the dog got up and ran off. never saw the dog on the road again.
twistygirl. at least call animal control so it is on record, incase you or anyone else does have a problem and you can't blame the dogs. just like some people shouldn't have children, some people shouldn't have kids.
hope you have a fun weekend this weekend, doesn't look like i'll be up to leesburg do to the fact that i'm up in wisconsin hoping my daughter has her baby this weekend. hope to have the chance to meet you some other time. |

Which is exactly why someone needs to train the dogs that chasing motorcycles isn't in their best interests. In order to do that, one must reward good behavior and correct bad behavior.
A verbal correction probably won't suffice in this case. I would start with an auditory correction, such as an air horn. If that doesn't work, the ammonia bottle would be the next step.
I can't think of a decent way to reward good behavior without a second person in the owner's yard to give the dogs treats when they don't chase. |

You're not going to train a dog based on one, or even a few interactions. It takes repition.
Anyways, the dog needs to be trained less not to chase and more not to leave the yard. |

No actually the dog does not need to be trained to be honest. The owners of the dog need and will have to take responsibility of the dogs action's by law. Where I come from trained or not a dog may not be unleashed or off a lead. If the dog is then it must be in a fenced yard and wearing proper ID tags. |

I'd say it depends on the dog. Anything Jack Russell and smaller just gets ignored. Anything Irish Wolfhound or larger... I suppose pull over and let it eat your bike in peace while you casually sneak away?
Medium sized? That's tough, especially with two on you. Can't take a kick at one and risk dumping the bike in front of the other. Hate to say, but the "by the book" approach probably works best here. Drop down a gear, slow until they're almost on you, and then use your magical v-twin torque to sprint away once you've got clear path ahead of you. Return later in cage and give bad dog owner what-for. |

I T-boned an Irish Wolfhound back in the early 80's on my ol' 68 Shovelhead. Big sumbitch! Almost knocked his saddle off!
The bike went up over him with the front wheel and I went down on the right side. Dog got up and took off immediately after.
I was doing maybe 25, and it all happened in what seemed to be slow motion. The bike went over on my right leg, and I kept my foot under it - my steel-toed Chippewa was protecting the bike, and I was able to extract the leg just as the bike stopped sliding.
I had a bruised ankle and a scuffed boot.
Bike had it's tank emblem flattened and scuffed, plus the 2-piece bars I had on it got mis-aligned, but not damaged. I guess the 2 of us, under the bike, kept the damage down.
That damned dog chased me again, the very next day!

We have an Exotic animal farm down the road from me. Every time I go by on the bike I have an Emu that runs along the fence next to me. I think she like following me because I have a huge white helmet. She must think it's one of her eggs! It's hilarious. |

If a dog is chasing you as you drive by, stop, park bike, chastise owner of dog harshly, and report to animal control. It is the sole responsibility of the owner of said dog to control and restrict there dog from the public.
DO NOT kick at the dog, it is an invitation to play...and they will!
If you stop, odds are the dog will see that as "game over" and go back to it's launch point. |

'Loose' refers to dogs not on leash--not 'loose' like your sister/mum/offensive anecdote. |

I had a neighbor down the road that always had a dog out that would chase me , almost caused a wreck the first time, I just started stopping in front of the house and revving the motor (jardine pipe) while the dog stood there in the road and barked. . after awhile the dog was in a fence .
