A few years back, I did a "top 100 names" search. Look over a few years to get some that are on the trailing edge. (The books have too much trash to be worth it.) Pick your favs, have your wife pick her favs, trade lists and cross out what you can't handle. That's not quite what we did, but more along the lines of what I wish I'd have done.

Boys names were hard for us. Good thing Luke came last! Like Easy said, find names you both like and go from there. Many times you'll not know the name until you actually see your new baby. Best of luck!

Family names had a little more pull in my family.

Named our son Ethan. I wanted something that wasn't "normal" so when I called out his name for supper, he knew I was calling him and not the 3 other Johnny's in the neighborhood. We also took how the name is spelled in to account. My father's name is Delmar. Everytime, and I mean everytime, he gives his name out over the phone he has to spell it for the other person. Maybe that's why my brother's are Ray and Tom, and I'm Dan...

Same would go for Erik/Eric, Jon/John, Sean/Shawn etc

Many times you'll not know the name until you actually see your new baby

I always had a problem naming somebody I hadn't even met yet.
When I had my first boy, we couldn't decide. His mom, who I was married to at the time told me the nurse said we couldn't take him home without a name.
We got one from the last page and one from the front. Zachary Adam. It worked, I reckon, he still looks up every time you yell it.
I checked about having a name before going home thing, bogus as suspected. (ex may have come up with that)
My next one, a daughter was "baby girl Lewis" for a month! I told her Mother I was going to wait till she could talk and ask her. I lost.

I say wait and see. You wouldn't want to name him "Sprite" and then find out he acts or looks like a "Tab".
You may even come up with some new and unique names when you change that first diaper.

Is she going to put this baby thing off till the last minute?
Everybody's waiting!
Rotzaruck!

Just a little heads up, If like mine, your wife's family speak another language, try to pick a name that is pronounced the same in both languages.

We called my lad Kavan, which is a celtic name & exists in various forms in Scots, Irish & Breton, a litteral translation apparently means Man of combat, or warrior.

Oh & make sure whatever name you choose, that it or the initials don't say something dumb when written down. I'm constantly amazed by the cretins who thoughtlessly saddle their kids with crap names.
A kid at school was called Raymond Sunshine, yup his mum's little ray of sunshine, I'd have shot her!

There is a long out of print book titled "What not to name the Baby". If you can find it....read it.

Essentially, the author says 2 things.

1. What a child is called will affect the personality & his entire future. "Charlie" is a different fellow that "Charles", or "Chaz". etc.etc.

2. For the sake of the future!! Don't name the kid something that will get him/her heavily teased. "Rainbow" gets beat up. Any male name that can be feminized....will be. Patrick becomes Patricia & patty. ( Patrick is of course a wonderful name )

Children are MONSTERS....CRUEL MONSTERS!!!
They have fantastic sensibilities on weak points and lack the learned kindness that many adults have. Think emotional velociraptors.

So unless you want your offspring to be the first person to mass suicide with a megaton class fusion bomb, "They won't call ME steady freddy again...EVER!!!!!" pick with care & love. ( and an appreciation of sub human cruelty )

Good luck.

>>>"What not to name the Baby"

Where was it when my folks named me "Courtney" after an English race car driver in 1953?

: )

I have a Colin Lewis and a Bryce Hunter . . . . they are best friends and as different as night and day.

No, seriously- this may sound weird, but take some time and go on a walk around a graveyard. Preferably an old one.

I live across the street from one, and every time I walk through, I try to take the time and consider all the cool old names that have gone before me. Plus, although I don't know anybody buried there, I like to just think about them. Lotsa cool old names, specially the womens.

My son

Avery Jarden is 7 months old now. I too wanted a name that wasn't popular. If he doesn't like Avery I gave him the option of A.J.

I waited until he was born and that's the name that stuck in my head that night. I don't know where it came from but it was in my head.

I talked to Andrea and she is on board with waiting till the baby is born till we name it. She is worried that if we pick a name it won't fit the baby. Going to the doctor now to see what the scoop is! The baby needs to come soon! She is just misserable and can't sleep any more. I will post a family pic

Remember that you have to have a name BEFORE you leave the hospital. : )

I had the task of naming my son before he was born. If it was a girl, she would name her.

Well I said I wanted to name him Duncan......... nope. She didn't like it. So the rules changed and it was still my decision but she had to agree to it..... fine.

Here's what I did: I got the stupid baby names book, 2 of them to be exact, and wrote down all the names that I liked. Once I had the list completed, I went and removed all of the iffy names. This brought me to a list of ~15 or so names. Well I reduced that list to 3 and rated them from 1-3 in order that I liked the most. Then gave her the list and had her do the same, the one with the least points won. (the one that I liked most got a 1 and the least got a 3)

Ended up with Donovan James. : )

Here's a pic of my little guy.

Enjoy. I'm loving every minute of being a parent.

That apple didn't fall far from the tree! He's a cutie!

As for names, narrow it down like Damnut said. Say them out loud, do you still like the name? Is it a name that will still "fit" as your child grows up? Are there nicknames that you can't stand associated with a proper name? That killed it for many of the proper names I liked. With our three children, none of them have names which can be shorten into something else. Can't wait to see pics and what name you have chosen.

My son is named Thomas Jack, Thomas is a family name, My grandfather, my Dad, and myself. Jack was his moms grandfather. All three men we respect and admire, so it was my way of paying respect and giving my son something to live up to (no easy task). My daughter we named Raelynne Denise. Raelynne we just liked the sound of, and Denise was my sisters name. Sorry to shorten all that I always think it's good to name kids after someone who you respect. My Grandfather was my biggest hero and telling him I was naming my son after him made him very happy and proud.

At least he will command attention.

When my son was born we had a name picked out that I had languished over for weeks. at the last minute , I changed my mind and went with the family name trend. (same first name different middle )
