I have wondered for awhile who makes the best gas. Living in the midwest there is BP with "invigorate", Kwik Trip "top tier" and Holiday stations "Blue planet" and Super America they dont label theres as anything special.

I have been told to stay away from the pumps that claim 10% ethenol blend.

Can someone shine some light on how to find the "best" fuel for my engines, IE cars trucks bikes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, doesn't all gas in MN contain 10% ethanol? I think it was required after all of the ethanol subsidies went into effect. I usually go to BP, never had an issues.

99% of stations out there will have up to 10% ethanol, at least that's the case here in Upstate NY. I did manage to find a station that adds no ethonal, but the prices are a little higher and the location is a bit out of the way.

Mark, just curious where is this station? Its NYS law that all on road gasolines be minimum 10%. Perhaps he isn't complying with the law requiring the sticker on the pump.

I could be wrong, but I thought i read some time back that the 10% law was suspended to help alleviate "the" skyrocketing gas prices?

The law has nothing to do with prices, its about environmental impact. Ethanol is used to blend with gasoline instead of MTBE. MTBE has been found leaking into drinking water, and the Ethanol blended fuels burn cleaner.

The cost of E10 gas is about 8 cents higher per gallon than equivalent E0.

I misstated my previous post, there is no law requiring the gas to be E10, but there is a ban on MTBE and the workaround for that is to use E10.

I am aware of the reason for ethanol blends and the law requiring it. 8 cents a gallon is a lot .....to a politician making believe they are doing something productive anyhow, but then I too misstated my question regarding additives. What were we talking about again?

For all practical purposes, all gasoline within the stated octane ranges is the same...the fuel stock for all of them comes from the same pipeline....the individual retailers add their additive packages at the fuel depot...the only exception to the rule is for "non branded" fuel like in some "Quicky Marts"...they can have mystery fuel.

"Mystery Fuel" explained...there are no dedicated pipelines for regular, mid grade, or high test...the fuel is piped in slugs...there is some intermingling at the beginning and end of slugs...this fuel is sold seperately, and will meet minimum standards, but in some cases will be very high quality....

I prefer Sunoco or Chevron/Texaco...I won't buy Citgo...Chavez can KMA!!!!

Next time we meet, I will buy you a soda. That should cover the cost difference to fill up your car and a bike. : )

Politicians a while back were talking about removing some gas taxes, which would knock off a few cents per gallon depending on which tax it was (State, Fed, etc.). That wouldn't solve the issue of high gas prices. I believe it was Hillary that wanted to remove the gas taxes and tax the gas companies more, which is even stupider, because they would just pass on the extra taxes right back onto the consumer.

Before my thread jacking, we were talking about what’s the best gas. It is hard to say, there is lots of regulations, various blends, octanes, additives and so forth. What you can get in one state is totally different than another state. As an owner of a Sunoco station I am a bit biased and run Sunoco 93 99% of the time, or another major brand if I am in a pinch. I avoid places with gas pumps from the 1900's or look run down. They are more likely to have fuel that is contaminated with water.

Ok I am done thread jacking : D

Thats one of the reasons I don't buy from these places. Before my place became a Sunoco, we were just "Scardera's Gas Station". We would shop around and get quotes from Shell, Mobil, Sunoco and so on and get the cheapest price. We only bought good gas, and our tanks are beyond up to code. You essentially would be getting main brand gas without the main brand price because of the reduced overhead and increased competitiveness.
