For the past few days I have had a skin irritation that started at the top of my leg, right below my right "Cheek", where the leg "bends" but it has now spread to the side of my leg and the top of my leg. There is no rash, there is no redness, but it feels like I have a sunburn and hurts when I touch it. Any ideas? Not an April Fools joke.

Ever have Chicken Pox? It can come back in adulthood as Shingles. Do some research, but if it persists you should see a doctor.

And they never work very hard.....walk into the exam room...look at you ......say yep thats a rash or that mole looks strange.....tell the nurse to write a script or biopsy the funny looking mole.....walk out the exam room 5 min later....collect 500-1000.

What a damn racket.....if only I'd been smart enough at a younger age to get in on it.

Oh, and shingles may be a very good guess, and man oh man do they suck. I hope it turns out to be somethign else...gl

Wife is a nurse and she says it sounds like shingles also, very hard to get rid of, see a doctor.

Yeah, I've known 2 ppl that had shingles. That sounds about right. If so, the sooner it's looked at the better. IIRC shingles will take a looong time to recover if you don't treat them soon enough.

Pammy,

I guess we are both right.

"The initial infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes the acute (short-lived) illness chickenpox, and generally occurs in children and young people. Once an episode of chickenpox has resolved, the virus is not eliminated from the body but can go on to cause shingles—an illness with very different symptoms—often many years after the initial infection."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shingles

"The earliest symptoms of herpes zoster, which include headache, fever, and malaise, are nonspecific, and may result in an incorrect diagnosis. These symptoms are commonly followed by sensations of burning pain, itching, hyperesthesia (oversensitivity), or paresthesia ("pins and needles": tingling, pricking, or numbness). The pain may be extreme in the affected dermatome, with sensations that are often described as stinging, tingling, aching, numbing or throbbing, and can be interspersed with quick stabs of agonizing pain. In most cases, after 1–2 days (but sometimes as long as 3 weeks) the initial phase is followed by the appearance of the characteristic skin rash."

and:

"Antiviral treatment is recommended for all immunocompetent individuals with herpes zoster over 50 years old, preferably given within 72 hours of the appearance of the rash."

Cochise,

If it is Shingles, you should seek treatment immediately for the most effective results.

coming from an RN, it indeed sounds like shingles and yes, the best time to treat it with antivirals is asap. If one waits too long the med doesn't help as much. The primary purpose of the antiviral is to hopefully keep the outbreak to a lesser degree, it is not a cure and it can come back.

It is not contagious but one wouldn't want to be around anyone that hasn't had chicken pox or is immunocompromised ie cancer, HIV.

Also if it is shingles, there can be lasting pain well after the outbreak is gone. The OTC med called capsacion (sp) can help but don't use it if there are ANY open lesions. It's made with cayenne pepper and will burn like......

Pammy, it's not technically the herpes virus. It's the varicella virus. We can still make fun of him though.

From Shingleinfo.com:
"Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once a person has had chickenpox, the virus can live, but remain inactive, in certain nerve roots within the body. If it becomes active again, usually later in life, it can cause Shingles. "

Now don't make me laugh at you too...

The only reason that I even know about this is My Mother in Law came down with Shingles. It was bad.
I a making jokes here(it's how I roll) but I do have sincere sympathy for anyone who gets shingles.
