Somebody had a thread about almost being rear ended and thank God they had been checking the rears and had the clutch in. Not sure who that was but thanks About 2 weeks after reading that (it's been awhile) I had the same thing happen. Stopped at a red and noticed a honda emblem getting real close so popped the clutch and ran the red light. I put it in nuetral half the time b4 reading that post. Another thread today reminded me that I never got around to saying thanks.

in gear or not you can get rear ended at any time. I was rolling, braking and in gear when I went to check my 6 and BLAM!

Stupid drivers can strike at any time without warning!

im 80 percent in neutral, never been rear ended.

Just like spidy says, anytime, anywhere. I always hear people say to keep it in gear, but really.... where you going to go? Left or right is about the only option, but most the time there is already traffic there..

They teach you in MSF to plan yourself an escape route and position your yourself accordingly. Lane split, median, right turn, jump the curb, whatever it takes. DON'T stop centered 1 foot from the bumper of the car in front of you.

+1 Hughlysses.

I say 4, because I don't consider the ticked off loon that pushed be into the intersection with his van as a rear ending. More of a pushing.

I've actually snuck in between two cars on occasions where I would have been rear ended.

Hm. Makin me think I need to install that Sho-me LED flasher on my new topcase brakelight on the Uly. Got a wigwag flasher on the S2 brakelight and a pulser on the S1W's brakelight, the Uly is the only one I have that doesn't flash...and it's the one I'm riding most these days.

I'm also always at the corner of the car in front of me, in gear, with room to escape just in case.

wow ourdee-4! I was rearended once(lady was doing well over 30mph) and decided that was enough for me on the street for awhile. You're a strong individual-or maybe don't have a nagging voice(either in your head over behind you somewhere: ) )

One hit me knocked me forward and hit me again, I only count that as one. A lady parked underneath of me she was doing 45+ while yacking on a cell phone. I asked her how she was doing and she held up a finger for me to wait till she was done with her call. I moved away from her so that I couldn't throttle......, Back still has it's moments from that one. My favorite was the kid that hit me on my Honda 550four. His dad gets out of the passenger side and goes off on me like I caused the accident. I had my left turn signal on and was in the left turn lane with traffic coming from the opposite direction, But I was at fault cause I was on a motorcycle and in his son's way. That was the worst donkey chewin' I have ever delivered as I escorted him back to his seat. I had just got out of the military after 6 years as a cop and kept about a 1/2" from crossing the line. His kid must have lived with his mom, cause he was bright and polite.

Ceejay, trick is to get the voices in your head arguing amongst themselves so that you can do what you want.

I was rear-ended on I-75 just north of Knoxville, TN in 1998 by a Comcast van. I had just rode into a wall of rain and all the traffic in front of me was checking up. I was behind a little Honda and had another one behind me. The girl behind me was leaving a generous space but the Comcast driver made a move for the exit ramp from the left lane and clipped my rear wheel cause he "didn't see me". That's how hard it was raining. Me and the S3 were sent sliding down the interstate and the poor girl in the Honda ran over the Buell but missed me. She was able to identify the van after she collected her wits(she thought she had ran over me). I walked away from the accident unhurt. A state police officer helped me duct tape the tail section back together and rewire the lights(what was left of them)in a gas station. I rode home from the crash(400 miles) but have always been a little gun shy since.

A guy in Belgium rearended me at a set of lights once, he was in a E class Mercedes.
I was in a 40 ton rig.
No contest.I hardly felt a thing, it wan't until I saw his drivers door open & steam blowing out both sides of the semi that I realised something had hit me.
The E was a write off though.
Bloke said he's fallen asleep.

Knock on wood, the last time I was rear ended on a bike was 27 years ago. I was setting behind a chevy truck at a stop light. I was watching a fine example of a woman in daisy duke shorts walking down the side of the road but I was stopped so no harm. The guy coming up behind me was also watching but he was going about 30 mph. All I heard was his screeching tires on the pavement before I found myself being launched into the ditch and landing flat on my back. Fortunately I only got the wind knocked out of me but my bike (Honda 250XL) was totaled when it got crushed between the rear bumper of the truck and his front bumper. To make things worse the a*&hole drove off and left me laying there. The guy in the chevy truck was nice enough to take me and my bike home.

Here's one for y'all. (I didn't get rear ended, but the guy next to me did..)

We were bar hopping in San Fran back in the day ('86?), . It was still daylight and we all (8-10 of us) were getting on the freeway to go across town to another pub. Well most of us passed this car legally on the left lane of the on-ramp, and the last one of us, who was carrying a passenger decided to give the car the bird.

Well, at speed, the car decided to get right on the rear of that guy and gals bike. Our friend decided to put on his brakes a bit to get the car to slow down...no luck.

As soon as the front bumper hit his rear tire, it sucked the whole rear wheel under the car, pushed the passenger into the riders position, and the rider was straddling the tank and bars of his bike when they all came to a grinding halt. From 55 to 0 in a matter of feet.

Miraculously, the bike remained on two wheels, and nobody was seriously injured.

We all left when the law arrived except of course for those three.

I never found out what the legal outcome was.

It's not the voices in my head-I learned to ignore those a long time ago, it's that female one in the passenger seat that keeps chiming in about this and that...

Ceejay, I'm always nervous hauling passengers because I know the dangers, they don't. Big responsibility. I prefer riding solo, don't tell my wife.

I had a drunk whip out in front of me and almost kill me at like 90 on a 30 mph street, So i followed him and i could see him fighting with his girlfriend and he suddenly slammed on his brakes and i was on a little honda xl 250 enduro and i slammed right into him and smashed my nutts on the tank so hard and one of the head bolts snapped in the motor.

When the law got there he was arrested for DUI and i was still hurting with a busted bike...moral of the story don't chase drunks.

I have not been rearended yet, but have had several close calls where the idiot in question got stopped short of hitting me.

A close friend wasn't so fortunate a few years ago...he had ridden all the way to Sturgis from here in Florida...made it all the way back to within 20 miles of home...while at a traffic light waiting for the green, some gal gabbin' on a cell phone ran completely over him...dragging his body 200+ feet down the road before stopping...cops said she must have been running 90mph...sad...dude was a great guy.

I got a love tap at a stop light on the Buell, no harm, no damage. I checked everything out and it seemed fine, so I let the person go.

I lightly rear ended a pickup truck once in my S10. The driver staggered out as I was dialing the police, told me not to worry about it as he was drunk and didn't want a DUI...

My old man used to have a 68 stang, 351W, rochester rollers, flowed heads, offy intake, C-6 with a B&M shift kit, 4:11, fun stuff.
When I was a teenager I used to get to drive it into town to get cheeseburgers. The car was all go, no slow(brakes were shot). waiting in the McD's drive thru I forgot to pump them and hit a mom and her 3 kids doing about 1 mph. I was going oh crap, oh crap, oh crap, and finally bam! (you know how things slow down when you're in an accident-well think how slow they went when I was already doing 1 mph) The three kids all tumbled forward and then popped their heads up in the rear glass-"what the hell was that?" written all over their faces. The mom gets out, looks at her car, laughs(there was nothing there), gets back in and we motor along. I was putting new brakes on that weekend...Man I miss that car, Took my senior prom date out in it, used to drive it to work. What punk kid gets to drive a car like that to work? Someday...

My wife used to ride with me, but with three kids I was a nervous wreck most of the time. Now, my Buell is going to be a track only bike, as the Inside Pass days set the hook(too bad they aint running them anymore)
