My wife popped a car in the rear end with her 2000 Z71 pickup over the weekend, and the adjuster is claiming it's totaled (which I kinda' doubt, considering when the airbags popped she didn't even have enough momentum to get touched by them!).

Anyway, can anyone tell me what my options are to get the truck back WITHOUT having the "totaled" badge smacked across it? This thing has a ton of sentimental value to my wife since her father recently passed away, and it was his pet vehicle. I NEED to get it back, and roadworthy.

It depends on the insurance rules in your state and insurance company. Being in the body shop business, I have seen many people in the same situation over the years. Most places I have seen, you can negotiate this with the adjuster by telling them what you want to do. Ask for the estimate and pricing method that they are using to determine the value of your truck. They can show you where the vehicle stands in terms of dollars and you can have a bodyshop do an estimate to back up what is being said.

It used to be that if the owner paid the salvage price for the remains of the vehicle, the title would stay "clear" because there was no transfer. Now days the insurance records can be picked up by DMV's and the title could get marked, so who knows.

If you plan on owning the truck till the wheels fall off, what is your concern with the mark on the title? (Just wondering)

What they both said.

Good luck! Scrapes and minor dents, that's what those fake bullet stickers are for. I love stickers.

Froggy, according to the adjuster, if it has a salvage title, we have talk the state into letting us have it and do the repairs ourselves, which can take 6 months for them to decide, and then the state gets to inspect it. If the state doesn't like the repair job, they can refuse to give it a tag, which means all that money just went up in smoke.

Now, that's ALL second hand information, from the adjuster to my wife to me, so it could be totally mixed up. I haven't had a chance to get involved in it just yet... I haven't even seen he truck.

My trucks (98 S-10) was totaled when a dude turned left in front of me.Took "his" insurance company 7 weeks to settle.I did not drag my insurance company into this as it would more than likely raise my rates with the claim...even tho I WAS NOT at fault. Truck booked at $5,400. I got high book plus $200.00 because it was in such great shape before the wreck. Repair estimate was $3,900.00 and they missed quite a few items. I bought it back for $1,200.00 and bought parts on eBay for $413.00 and Chevy at $100.00. Paint was $300.00. Truck should be back on the road in another week and like new again. I am doing all the repairs, cept the "carry in,carry out" paint parts, No salvage title. I think I was very lucky in this damned dealio. I was stressed but patient with the slow response time of the insurance company. Never got mad with them, but whined a little.

Our '99 Contour got totaled a year ago, but I took the lower payout, kept it and then sold it in September. Maybe Carfax would show that but I didn't even think about it being "totaled". But what could the buyer expect for $1300?

In Ohio, they don't inspect the vehicle to make sure the repairs are good. They inspect safety items. When I went with my old roommate when his bike was inspected... They made sure there were no leaks from the brakes, checked the lights and that was about it.
