I am unfortunately white and male, and 27. I have busted my ass to get into a great university, have 2 semesters to go, and can't afford it.
I am trying as many angles as I can. I am a Officer candidate for the USMC, there's 1500 bucks a year. The feds only give $3000 in financial aid,Tried the school loans but can't qualify because I don't make enough money. No shit I am a college student and need money jack asses. Working lame part/full time jobs at barely minimum wage because I can't go 9-5 are barely paying rent but not food bills. This shit sucks. Just needed to vent.
Hopefully someone has a good Idea.
I know most of you have been in this spot before. How'd you make it?
Anyone hiring a for night job or Fri Sat Sun that pays well in The San Fran Bay area? (cost of living here sucks)
My apologies for the rant, but need ideas and an outlet...

I am a little confused, usually the less $$ one makes, the more financial aid one qualifies for. When I went to college, I didn't qualify for grants because I made too much money. Maybe you are filling the applications out in a fashion that doesn't make you appear as destitute as you deserve to be.

Call me on Monday and I may be able to hook you up to the Job Finder service where I work. 503-4879

$8620 is the maximum amount that I can make and qualify for most things. My GPA is only 3.350 too so that's a bit of a problem. I think I made 12,000 last year, but pulled a crap load from my IRA to pay tuition and I think that counts as income.
But expect that call... 503-4879 Thanks

I have no good solution to your short time problem for tuition. As an Officer Candidate, can you do any USMC Reserve duty for pay? I did AFReserve on the weekends and went to school during the week, fed the family and got the ends close...

down the road a few years...I assume you will have some assistance in repaying the student loans from your service to country?

May I suggest...start purchasing MDU's(multiple dwelling units) that show or should show a return beyond purchase, interest, taxes, insurance, maintenance and a management fee...amortize for pay off in 7-10 years, adjust rental rates to coincide with pay off schedule. Consult with a really good tax accountant.

When you're well into your military career, you'll have an equity line to fund further MDU activities or enjoy riding!

Remember, if you marry, she could end up with half...sometimes, it's just better economically to pay for sex up front...unless of course she brings substantial assets that equal or exceed your own.

Hang tough, do what ever is necessary to finish school and secure that commission! You're two semesters away from one of life's grandest adventures...

Oconnor, already too late to auction your virginity on eBay? : )

I saw that a girl in England is doing that because the damn Labour party isn't giving her a free ride and she doesn't want to leave the university with a college loan.

Try www.fastweb.com for more ideas, but you should at least qualify for a subsidized Federal Direct Loan.:
Maximum Annual Amount: $2,625 for freshman, $3,500 for sophomores, $5,500 for juniors/seniors.
Open to US citizens or permanent residents with financial need.
Send FAFSA to processor by March 1.
Loan Terms: Variable interest rate - Maximum of 8.25%. Repayment begins six months after student leaves school.

If you make less than poverty and don't qualify for a loan I'd suggest changing advisors.

At any rate you really need to complete your FAFSA and get it in soon.

Can you go active into the Corps and then finish college with their assistance? I got my education both during my 10 yrs in the USMC and after. Both degrees paid for compliments of Uncle Sam.

Oconnor,
I'm in engineering school right now, and haven't really had a problem with getting loans. I have an co-op job with John Deere 6 months out of the year, and make a considerble amount with that job. Before I had the co-op, I had a credit ready loan that I was eligible for. My loan is serviced through the MI State Higher Education Loan association or some shit, but the actual loan is through Nelnet. Ask the fin. aid office where you go to school, they should be able to at least help you out in some manner.

If you want some additional advice, shoot me an email at awprior@yahoo.com with some more specifics of your situation, and I'll see what I can dig up.

I am in the Air National Guard and they pay 100% tuition and the G.I. Bill. I am surprised the Candidate program doesn’t pay 100% tuition if you are going active after college. I know that varies state to state. Good luck.

I can also take out $20,000 in student loans then the Air Force will pay that back. Maybe my state is just hurting for recruits

I worked as a financial aid officer at a small college for several years before quitting to go to law school (where I am now). What you say about making too much money for loans is flat out incorrect. Federally guaranteed student loans are just - guaranteed... regardless of income or past credit history. Banks are willing to loan money under these terms because the U.S. Department of Education will pay back your lender if you skip town and decide to default. A significantly large number of people finance their educations through Title IV loans (yours truly included). I'll be over $60K in debt when I graduate from law school. Think of it as an investment.

Also, your college's financial aid administrator can use their own professional judgment to not consider the "income" on your tax return that comes from cashing in an IRA. This would lower the AGI (adjusted gross income) figure on the tax return that (in conjunction with your family size) determines your level of financial need.

In case I've gotten too far ahead, you need to first complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), will tell your school what the government thinks your level of need is. This level of need is called an EFC, or "expected family contribution." Because you are over 24 and presumably not married, only your own income will determine what your level of need is. There are no questions about your race on the FAFSA, either.

Lastly, your school's Financial Aid Office will most likely bend over backwards for you if you are polite and don't blame them for inadequate supplies of Federal and state money. When I was working in the field (until this past September), I really began to hate both my job and many of the people I was trying to help. Getting yelled and treated with gross disrespect for reasons way, way beyond my control gets old really fast.

There are many sources of information on this subject available online. I won't take the space here. Feel free to e-mail me if I can offer any additional insight. In the meantime, I need to learn more about getting a free replacement shock for my '97 S3T from Buell. Anyone know anything about this?
