Politics and religion are subjects that most people should avoid.
My best friend and I were absolute opposites.
He was staunch conservative, Rush Limbaughs biggest fan.
A Protestant.
A Mason.
We met when he was assigned to me for training on the police department.

We argued religion and politics always.
We also disagreed on whether Oswald shot Kennedy. (I'm sure that he did)

Through all this we remained best friends.
I was at his bedside four years ago when he died.
I kissed him on the cheek, goodbye.
I miss him.

But I think I will refrain from discussing either subject here, from now on.
It seems to turn from being friendly.
I don't want that.

I will, now, try to refrain from opening obvious posts on those subjects.

Indeed, you're right.

I will only avoid those two subjects that are way too touchy for most here.

I will voice my opinion and defend it on any other subject.

I can't wait for good weather to ride.

One thing, we all seem to agree on, is, Buells are the best.

My neighbor is a mason but an obama supporter. His wife freely throws the N-word around and is an obama supporter. He said to me once, "I dont see how a working man can support a republican candidate".

Nice people but opposite politically from me.

I am mason and I voted for Obama but I have voted for many republicans in the past. I would tend to say I vote more Rep then dem I have inhaled and I have used the N word and a few others when I am mad that don't make me a bad guy

Old_man, It hit 60 here today, but my body is still detoxing. Without fore knowledge I ate some food with a lot of MSG in it last week. It is a trigger for my migraines, so I'm not back 100% yet. Just minor aches swelling and one eye twitching a little now. When I get the migraines, I loose any sense of humor. I tried reading a joke book and just didn't get it. I can't handle politics at those times. Like Clint said "limitations".

Brumbear, NO,You'll just make a martyr out of them and have to celebrate their B'day every year.

Big Red drinks kick off migraines for me.

I can tell when one is coming because I lose most of my vision in one eye.
I can hold my hand up and it just disappears.

I have to find a dark quiet hole and pray that I can go unconscious before the searing pain hits.

Ft_bstrd, It starts with my left vision Left hand disappears, can't feel left hand, lips and nose goes numb next. I know I'm in real trouble if the right side goes. Then I can't put words together. Usually by then I've downed a bottle of tylenol and ate one of any other pain killer anyone around me will give up. If I don't get the pain meds in time I start throwing up. Laying face down on cool concrete helps. I used to black out when I was a kid. So, I try to stay away from triggers.

Now what were we talking about? Oh, staying away from triggers.

Old_man I'm sorry to hear that. There's a few names on those political threads I look for, not because I agree or disagree, but 'cuz they seem to know what they're talking about and I might learn something. Your name was one...BTW you're right he did it.

If people can have a civil discussion without taking things too personal, I can't think of any two subjects that are more important, or deserving of discussion.

Old_man, I hope it wasn't me that 'ran you off'.

I actually look forward to having a spirited debate with you. You challenge me to apply critical thought to my personal beliefs. I treasure that.

I apologize publicly & profusely if this thread is due to my 'funk' from yesterday. Please keep challenging me & providing an opinion contrary to mine. I truly do appreciate it.

S O M E D A Y we'll get to be able to discuss our differing thoughts over a fire with a cold beverage of our choice. Until then, keep the fire in your belly and let's keep debating. OK?

No one need blame themselves for my decision.
I enjoyed our discussions and will continue to do so.
But I sensed that it might have created animosity, not from anyone I was in discussion with.
But many others who were following the discussion.
That's why I decided to forgo further discussion of these topics.
If we, someday, were to meet, it would be great to discuss any subject with you.
Maybe over some beers.

This reminded me.
I have a, great, true story about someone using the word "animosity".

I'll just give the punch line.

"I don't want to bring animosity into this."
response:
" I don't give a f**k who your ward chairman is.

Our neighbors are the same way. Die-hard conservatives, Fox News, Anne Coulter books, proud dittoheads. Best friends with my folks who are die-hard union Democrats, Bill Clinton fans. We can joke around, and sometimes serious discussions but never any animosity. You just gotta remember everyone can be friends no matter what the politics, friendships matter more! And all is reconciled over a nice cold Bud Light. I think my neighbors in parents get into it more over whether Chevy or Fords are better, and if Bud Light is better than Coors Light.

Too late for me Froggy....I'm already old!!!

Look at it this way Old_man ...debate is the wind that fans the flames of thought.

And on Migraines...mine always start with the old left eye floater gimmick and go from there...my trigger is lack of caffiene...if a get a big cup o Joe soon enough, I'm good to go.
