While I was leaving a SoCal HD/B dealer last Saturday, a guy on the street was trying to sell me a Jabra bluetooth device with its own ear buds that hooks into an iPod or mp3 player and wirelessly connects to your cell phone. He explained that it interrupts music when a call comes in and you can carry on a conversation using the device's microphone.

It sounded like a pretty neat deal (the device) but I wouldn't bite because it was probably stolen, and it didn't have a separate microphone that could be velcro'd into a helmet. Its microphone was in the device which had earbud wires and a wire to an iPod.

If I were to want to use a cell phone on the bike, I think I would want a bluetooth device with such features as 1) a separate microphone, 2) ability to plug into my existing helmet speakers, 3) be small, 4) and use rechargeable batteries.

So I was wondering, not having researched into this topic before but seeing the potential for such a device that could be useful to motorcyclists, are there other, maybe better devices that you all are using and your reasons for those choices?

You don't want much, do ya???

Seriously, I looked high and low for that "magical thing" of which you speak. It basically came down to hacking apart a bluetooth device like above(I have a Motorolla, works ok), and installing a lead with a plug for the mic. I had planned to use a mix of Motorolla, Autocom, Garmin Zumo, and generic parts.

But in the end, I just plug the ER6i's into the Blackberry and shove it into a pocket. When I get a call, the music stops, so I pull over and return the call if I recognize the number.

Maybe someone put something like this on the market since I last looked, and if so, I'd be interested.

Anybody does it, I'll buy one. I'm making my own for now but it will be a tossed together contraption./

Helmet bluetooth is great! I've been using one for nearly three years and it is one of the best things available on the occasional need. Virtually all helmet bluetooth currently on the market does not support stereo protocols, so you can't use bluetooth to listen to most music players. If you want phone/GPS, make sure your phone supports voice dialing, iPhones do not. I'll upgrade my bluetooth when I can get a stero version to go with my LG Dare.

OK, with a little research I think I found the particular bluetooth headset for iPod/MP3 player this guy was hawking. It's a Jabra BT325s.

It looks pretty good actually if taken on its merits, but the bulky part of it that has the microphone won't quite fit into a helmet unless it's taped or velcroed under the chin bar. And, like Tank & Court, I'd have to hack the earbuds off to adapt into the helmet speakers. Aarrgh!

Oh well, that's not too difficult, and combined with a Boostaroo amplifier, that might be the ticket. Hmmm.

If I'm doing a longish haul I'll put the buds in with a Creative mp3 player. Otherwise earplugs or just V twin rumble for playtime.
As for the telephone, I check it when I stop, I don't need that sort of distraction when I'm riding.
That's one of the things about riding for me, there's only me in my helmet.
When I had the FJ1200 & Madame used to ride pillion she pestered me to get an intercom, **** that! I persuaded her that the cheap ones didn't work & showed her the price of an expensive one. Job done!
As for bike to bike coms, hand signals & gestures have always worked so far, & it's much more fun trying to guess wtf your friend is on about.

Amen to that! haha

Here's a link to the Motorolla unit I bought.
Ebay link

Works pretty good. No amp needed with earbud/plug type earphones.
But the mic is built in and it's difficult to find the buttons with gloves on.

I use the cardo rider G2(?) I plug my ipod into the unit. The speakers are very thin and it bluetooths to my cell (and GPS).

Wes can also tell me when he has forgotten to strap his helmet and doesn't have to blast past me alerting the State constabulary to pull us over...well that's a long story.

It works well and I enjoy it. A new model is on the horizon. I can't wait.

i'm waiting for the magical device to come around but i talked to this one dealer one time and he said that they were trying to incorporate the earbone/jawbone or something like that technology, that the military uses to make an all in one device. i know it helps if i get the story straight but those in the militart now would have an idea what that deal is. the cardo looked nice and i might just get the next version if and when it comes out.
