I'm looking for an economical 1911 or clone. I had a Springfield 1911A1 and sold it, but can't seem to find any good deals. Used Spanish copies go for more than I paid for mine new a few years ago. Any ideas?

Prices are rising in the firearms market because of the looming firearms ban and the outright unfriendly beliefs held by those who are planning on passing pending legislation.

The writing is on the wall....buy now, buy often

Back in the early to mid '60s if your were a NRA member you could buy Remington Rands for $17.00 through the DCM.

Taurus makes a very nice 1911 with lots of good features standard that are usually custom. It's reasonable as far as quality/price goes. I have a Springfield that I like. But when the Tauras came out I kinda wished I would've got that one. Looked like the best deal.

Try out the springfieild XD. Its kind of a glocked out 1911. You get grip safety, trigger safety and high capacity. Feels great in the hands.

I'm familiar with the XD series. I'd like to buy a budget 1911 though. A clapped out, entry level, 1911 clone would be fine. I want to try some basic gunsmithing.

I'd suggest a Caspian slide or frame, good price & quality. See Brownells, or MidwayUSA.

Rock Island and Charles Dailey. CNC made of 4340 (?) in Philapinnes. Imported by the same guy. Basic "GI" model runs about $350 last time I checked. Looks and feel exactly like an old GI issue. People I know who have them are happy with them. Several in same situation as you are.

Cool, are those Rock Islands / Charles Dailey guns parts interchangable with the Colts 1911's?

A friend let me use a genuine GI issue .45 for about a month, and I loved it. After I had to give it back, I hunted up a 1991A1 in stainless... it was fine, and I think it was under $500 new in 96 or so... but never satisfied like that original GI issue did.

I'd much rather have an authentic reproduction of that original issue gun... slappy sloppy slide and all. It'll never do 1" groups at 50 yards, but will ***always*** do 8 inch groups, and ***always*** go "bang".

There are ( if I remember ) 3 generations of 1911 safety mechanisms. pre & post 1970 etc. I'd check out the firing pin safety & such. Mostly, though, they are compatible.

Great answer Aesquire : ) I'm nearly positive that all the non series 80 clones are FPS free. The FPS is hated, hated, hated, for many reasons, but it's effective. It's not brittle like many would have you to believe, but it does make doing a 'trigger job' more difficult.

Every firearms enthusiast should have a 1911 and if you've got plenty of disposable cash make it a Kimber.

I'm rather fond of the Para-Ord LDA models. I know it's heretical for 1911 fans, but the combination of a classic 50's S&W trigger pull, no cocked & locked carry, and 1911 safety/controls, works for me.

Kimber, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, etc. all make premium stuff. I find used Kimbers to be a real bargain in this area. They all are "done" with the bells & whistles, not like the old days where all there was was the Govt. models & you started with a blank canvas. ( the origin of the thread )

The Ed Brown Bobtails are very good for CCW use, if you can carry that big. See the "perfect 1911" link at Gunblast.com above. ( I find a S&W Bodyguard in Scandium frame far easier to hide. )

If you want a Kimber w/o a fp safety you need to find a so called "series I" model. I have a 10 year old or so Kimber Custom Target that is a great gun. Very tight, and the machining looks like it came from Wilson. Kimber used to make the frames and slides for Wilson by the way.

if you look hard enough rock island has started to make guns with more features!!! gun broker has them!

Limitedx1,

check out the 2 links I provided. $350 for GI. Not saying they are the best but I have not heard much bad about them either. There ARE forums on the 1911 boards all RI. Just like others for all SW, Ruger ect. So far the guys who either own the company or are the importers seem like stand up guys. Taurus looks good to me too!

Taurus is the way to go. Excellent value, and customer care. The reason they are so well priced, is because Taurus makes everything in-house. Right down to the screws. It's the best bang for the buck I have found. Thats my preference. If you get a chance, shoot a few different ones. GI, Commander, blah, blah. They all feel a little different. My favorite is my SIG.

From the prices of used guns and the cost of modifying them, I'd be better off buying one already done.

I checked out the Taurus at the LGS and really liked it. It was a steal at that price and uses all standard 1911 parts. I will most likely end up with the Taurus unless I can find a sweet deal on a 4" 1911.

I tried making friends with a Glock and it was like holding a 2x4. I just haven't been able to get into the Glocks.

The Springfield XD feels really nice (same ergo's as a 1911).

Handguns are like motorcycles. I like too many to be limited by my wallet.

I'm a big fan of the H&K usp and mk23. In a moment of poor judgment a few years ago I
sold my USP and my USP compact in 40 s&w. It was a dumb move, and I'm going to have to
replace them, maybe with just a single USP with an extra 357sig barrel.

I used to shoot 1911s in IPSC back in the late 80s (before it became an equipment race
and I far prefer the ease of cleaning the H&K polygonal rifling, and the elegance of the
(modified browning) H&K design with easy soldier proof, tool-less disassembly to boot.

The 1911 is a solid old war horse and it has an enviable record in the field, but for my
money....
