Hi everybody, my name's Mike and I was a WOW Junkie. I wasted so many hours on that POS game. Uggh. Been clean 3 months. Started playing bass. Finally detoxed and WOW free.

Anyway I'm in the market for a good RTS game. Something fun that takes advantage of modern graphics, has a good single player mode (maybe multi-player) and yet allows casual play. Something I can play for a couple hours at a time and isn't such a time sink as WOW. I haven't bought a new game in about 2 years. Pre-warcraft I loved starcraft, age of empires 2, and star trek armada II.

I've got a laptop with:
Intel core2 duo 2Ghz 2Ghz 64bit
4Gb Ram
Intel 4500 video with 1759Mb video ram

Any gamers here? Hit me up with your picks.

You will be back, 3.1 and Uldar is looking nice.

For my occasional RTS fix i play Rise of Nations, not system challenging but still fine. Excellent single player, but the cpu does get predictable.

Sorry Froggy. Not going back but thanks for the suggestions. I'll check those out.

Is the C&C series still around? I hadn't played that since Tiberium Sun. Anybody try AOE3?

Think I will try FEAR too, I remember playing a demo on my old comp and it didn't play well. Seemed like a cool game tho.

Thanks ya'll.

How come EVERY person I have ever met that plays that
world of Warcraft game is 100% addicted to it and plays it ever waking hour?

I can't play a video game unless I can do a burnout in a cool car, so I rarely play video games.

But man, I know 4 guys that do only 2 things every day!
Go to work and the the wow game, get hardly any sleep!

And I have never heard of anyone just playing it on occasion. I think it's really screwing people up!

It come with a crack pipe or something?

My kids were also addicted to that (as I like to call it) wizards of wienie world game too!! After their grades became un satisfactory I pulled the plug. Now they are much more social and seem to be happier in general. Now if I can just get my wife off of "mob wars" game thats on facebook......

That game is stupid, But my friend put in like 1000 hours into a character and then he sold the character for 2k.....I was stupefied that someone would actually pay money for his online character.

Yep, they just came out with another one recently I think.

I spend more time on Badweb than WoW. Yet I have logged 2042 hours in game on my main character.

Same one the Buell comes with. Both of them suck up my time.

I am stupified that people pay money for high end custom built vehicles. ; )

You go out there and do 40 man raids to kill Onyxia and deal with crap like people whining over not getting any loot or the other people that don't know how to play and screw it up for everyone. It is not easy to get a full T5 armor set, so those that do have it have earned it.

Here I thought you were talking about going out to a club, seeing all the hotties and not getting any play... and then W.O.W did not stand for Women on Wild...... World of Warcraft = Dungeon and Dragons 2.0 & just as

World of Warcraft is as addictive as cocaine.

I tried it once, but I just didn't get what people were so hooked on. When I went to college the first time, back in 1991, we had MUDs that you had to telnet to get into. It was all text based, and I probably spent four or five hours a day playing that, and then I spent four or five hours a day drunk. Needless to say, I failed out of college after a year and a half.

Now I don't spend nearly as much time on the games. I guess it's a matter of priorities - job, family, etc. took priority over games. But I can definitely understand the lure of losing yourself in a fantasy world...

After Burning Crusades came out, I spent just about every free moment for more than a year playing. I had laughed at guys like that in the past, and now I was one of them. One by one, friends who laughed at me got bitten by the bug and were drawn in by WoW, too.

Fortunately/unfortunately for me, my job got quite hectic and I was unable to carve out any time for the game. For several months, my life was nothing but kiss the wife and kids goodbye, work, sleep, repeat. Now that the pace in the office has mellowed, I find I've grown very ambivalent about going back to Azeroth. Part of me wants to play, but part of me would rather use the time for other stuff besides grinding mobs and raiding for new shoulders.

Ah--almost forgot my suggestion for Mike. Have you tried any of the Total War series of games (Shogun, Rome, Empire, etc.)? They have a simple interface, simple graphics and don't require much in the way of processing power or time commitment. I know this description doesn't make them sound all that grand, but believe me they are Super Fun.

There's a sweet, SWEET space sim called Evochron, and it's a mere $25. There are a few different versions... Evochron Legends was just released a few weeks ago. It's the most beautiful space game I've ever played. Handles very much like the old Wing Commander games. Probably the most impressive, the game was made by ONE GUY. Go read up on it, it's pretty cool stuff.

NOW I know why I haven't seen that XB running around.

+1

Although, I don't know how combat compares with a 40 man raid to kill Onyxia, because I've never seen Onyxia...

I know that the game companies work to make the games addictive. When I lived in San Diego
I had friends that worked over at Sony on the Everquest project and they had psychologists
and sociologists on staff to help them make the game into what it became: Ever-crack.
I knew people that disappeared into that game. WOW is no different except it is the next
generation and therefore more potent at hooking players.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input, I'll definitely check some of those out.

And all this time, I thought you were on a secret mission, hiding out keeping a low profile and all that stuff.
Hey Ed, yeah I've been busier then a one armed paper hanger, that and I travel about 30% of my time. I pretty much dropped off Badweb for about the last year and a half. We'll definitely have to get together this summer and do some riding. (Still liking Chattytown)

Edgydrifter, Never played TW sounds kinda like Age of Empires, I might check that out.

Swordsman, Evochron sounds good too. I'm always looking for a good replacement for Tie-Fighter Simulator. Damn that was an awesome game, wish it would be remade for modern specs.

City slicker,
Here I thought you were talking about going out to a club, seeing all the hotties and not getting any play...
Ha, that has been known to happen but it's not been an issue lately, thankfully, plus I'm kinda in an anti-hoochie phase right now. The play I'm wanting is probably not gonna be found in a club.

Once again, thanks all.

RTSes always pissed me off. I could never get those damned guys to pull off the plans in my head.

...only time I ever had much success with them was when I handled the strategy and made a friend handle the clicking. ; )

WoW...I've played since it came out, dropped it a couple times, and have found a happy medium. Some of my best friends have been made through that game (and no, we don't only talk about the game when we get together). I play when I am otherwise unoccupied and don't feel like reading. Strangely enough this only seems to occur with any frequency when the weather is @#$% up here. ; )

...and yes, I'm a huge nerd and regularly play/DM D&D as well - but I have motorcycles, so that helps even out the nerd / cool scales, right?

Personally, I'm really, REALLY looking forward to Diablo III coming out. I loved Diablo II - definitely one of my top 5 games of all time.

Nokia Marble Cannon, play on your cellphone.

It's about the most technical video game I can handle.

The only other alternative I can recommend, is Super-Mario Kart on the Wii.

Ahh...Super Mario Kart. The N64 version was the best, IMO. That was a great party game (of course, most things are fun when you kick everyone else's ass at them!). ; )

I'm still stuck on Age2 as far as RTS goes. It has a playability that seems to keep me entertained. There are a host of similar games out there, but they just don't compare.

"Nice town...I'll take it."

I play LOTRO these days for MMORPG.

Haven't been on a MUD for years. (For those of you that were not complete computer geeks growing up, that's a Muli User Dungeon.)

Age 2 is much better than 3 in my opinion. My favorite thing is massing the longbowmen and then having them all fire at the same time. Nothing survives : )
