Just a curious question for most of you out there. Have you noticed or been hearing of more crime (mostly theft) in your area? It seems as though there has been a huge outbreak of thieving going on here in the Indianapolis area. I've actually been hit twice now. Both vehicle related with a stolen car stereo complete with broken glass and a certain padlock snipping bandit on my enclosed trailer. Thankfully nothing was taken there.

On a similar note, I hear about more and more people getting their homes broken into. Probably 3 within the past couple months. What's going on? Frankly, I'm getting sick of it. Time to enhance security in a few key areas.

Two weeks ago, I was laying in bed and heard a noise in my driveway. When I looked outside, I saw someone digging through my toolbox on my pickup. I decided to take matters in my own hands. He aint commin round here no more.

Sounds like crackheads. They exist even in the rural areas. Crime is getting worse, people are out of work in record numbers. Street crime will be much higher come the summertime temps. Much higher security is definitely in order these days. Not being an alarmist, just a realist.

We have had a record number of bank robberies so far this year.
Most of them have been apprehended by the FBI.

My blame is not on Meth, but prescription pain killers (OC mainly).

Did any of you watch that 20/20 special last week about the poor WT from the Appalachians, did you notice the street price for an OC pill? $120 per pill.
I knew at one time here it was less than $20.

A few in my local township.

- This is happening at the local hockey rinks and movie theaters. They will break into cars with the garage door opener in sight. They will take the opener, the registration with your address OR your GPS if it has home flagged in it. Then they will go to your house and well the rest is pretty easy to figure out.

-Two guys will come to your front door selling carpet, tiles, etc. They come in for an 'estimate' then hand cuff you and rob you.

The A-Hole index is definitely up everywhere. Times get worse or are perceived to be and a too large minority of society become born again criminals. The law abiding masses now wrapped up in their own life changes / struggles become more ignorant ( for loss of a better word) to the situation and SHAZAM, quality of life and public safety go down the toilet. Unfortunately this is another long running trend that goes hand in hand with the sacrifices and rewards of a free capitalistic society. Given the choice though, I will take the free society any day of my life.

I shall fear no craphead, my Colt and my Winchester comfort me. I think a good up and coming technology will be non lethal auto defence systems for home and vehicle. Personally I like Claymores, but they are messy and illegal.

We are seeing these crimes reported more often, and as has been said there is a growing
class of people that feel entitled to what others have simply because they want it.

mix those two factors with the way society has withdrawn from each other by far and large
(how many block parties still go on? How many people know all of their neighbors as more
than someone they see in passing?) and this kind of behavior will run rampant.

The rule at Casa de Lantern is nobody uninvited comes into the house unless they have a blue uniform on, a marked car in sight and a active radio on their belt! I was walking back to the house this past Saturday and found a elderly gentleman scoping my Fios Terminal box on the side of the house. I placed the kids on the next door neighbors patio and approached him, he explained he was from Verizon and showed me his id badge explaining he was just confirming my service for a near future electrical code upgrade. He then said "At my age i am surprised that anyone would think I'm a criminal." I replied with a smile, "If I had a robbery ring going, I would hire you in a minute to case my targets!" Not to be outdone he replied "Well I guess it's nice to know I still have options!"

Something I have noticed lately. At least in Seattle everyone has a "story"

At first we had the run of the mill beggars. Cup in hand

Now I am seeing a lot of fast talking guys with sob stories. It is either, "Man I just got off a bus from _________ and I am supposed to meet someone, but they didn't show, I have no money, can you help? I promise to pay you back"

I ran into the same dude 3 nights in a row. Every time it was a different city... DC, Detroit, Kansas City...

Either that or "My van ran out of gas, I am trying to get back to ___________ , my kids are in the van, can you help me get some gas?"

Funny thing they try this crap I ask, "Where's the van, where's the kids?"

No kids, no van, but the unmistakeable look of drug withdrawal.

Corporate, I know exactly what your talking about. Happens everytime I go back to Baltimore. I notice he doesn't bother anyone else though, why does he single me out? I pretend to speak only Greek, then they usually try to give me to directions to Greektown and cojole a tip outta me. Nope, sorry. Crime goes up when the economy sucks, just a fact. Theres a whole class of people who rely on scamming others and being scummy, so when they get hit by the economy they're even more desperate. OC+meth=white trash drugs.

Out side the house, I'll run like a bunny, no problem with that. I can replace a car or any material stuff.

Once they decide my house is a place they want to come into, everything changes. I still practice with my my Colt Officers .45 ACP. If I ever have to shoot some one again, they're gonna stay shot.

I feel the increase in crime is directly related to economic turmoil.

My home was burglarized a few months ago.
Three other houses on my street were also broken into that same month.
My truck has been broken into twice in the last six months.

Granted, my proximity to public housing does not help.
However, my mother lives in a golf course community and it is not much better.

ADT and Remington for me!

Crime is on the rise. We are seeing neighborhoods getting hit where they tap the car windows breaking it. They grab whatever is in sight and easy to run with, GPS, CDs, laptops. Usually the consoles and gloveboxes are gone through as well. It's amazing how many people leave cash, laptops and other expensive items in their car, lots of times in plain view and many times unlocked!

Don't make it easy for the criminals. Lock your valuables up. Be sure all doors (especially sliding glass doors) and windows are locked. Don't leave your car unlocked on the driveway with the garage door in it and then leave the door from the garage to your house unlocked. You're giving criminals an open invitation to your home and family.

You can check with the Community Watch Department at your local police department. Many offer Home Security Inspections. They can offer suggestions that may help lessen your chances of being burglarized.

During a Community Watch meeting this past week, we just had a discussion about "ADT Protection" signs in the yard. Some people feel this gives them a sense of security. Of course, for the alarm to be effective, it must be activated. One of my officers brought up the fact of the "not knowing" gives you the homeowner some information that the criminal won't have until the alarm sounds.

Take a look around, protect yourself and your family. Be sure to keep your eyes open when you're out in public as well. Criminals are always looking for an easy or distracted target.

It is also good to have neighbors who care. Something I finally have. One of them was so used to seeing my truck in the drive. That when I traded it off last month he noticed. Also asked me about it. I also like that my work hours are varied right now. Someone could case the house one week. The next week it can be different.

As for me.... I have my CCL and take advantage of it. I have openly signed a petition to get "public open carry" allowed.
My state is one of the remaining six that do not allow it, as of the moment.

I also openly carry on my own property. I have gotten some looks from passers by.

Am I a fear monger? Not in the least. I only stand prepared for the worst.

I also believe that "alarm company" signs make you a bigger target.

Too many people have the signs and do not use the alarm(if installed)because it became a hassle.

Smart move.

Too many folks, most who have never been shot or shot anybody, are quick to jump on the "I'd gun'em down" bandwagon . . ain't quite that easy.

My first goal is to protect my family.

Everytime this comes up I suggest reading Masard Ayoob "In the Gravest Extreme" . . I still do.

I got shot 3 times many years ago and it's not as easy as in the moving pictures.

Every time I encounter people where they are not supposed to be ( my property ) I quickly start looking for their partner. A few years ago I had a 10 gauge pointed at the guy in the bushes while his buddy was checking out my car. He set off the alarm that paged me instead of making any noise. I told the guy by the car the first one I was going to shoot was his buddy in the bushes. His buddy took off running and he decided to follow.

Where I'm at now, I start the cameras rolling, and take up a defensive position.

Jeez,
Some good points up there. Theres a few things that concern me right now. Lots of cars broken into nearby, mine included. The logical thought process is to believe they're going to want in the house next. Granted, Mr 9mm makes me feel better but only when I'm home can I use it. It's a scary thing coming home after work and wondering what's broken into. Vehicles got alarms this past weekend.
